The first rifle I ever bought outright with my own money was a Savage 111 .243. I wanted a .223 but was talked into the .243 by the store owner, because the .223 was just not enough for coyotes. I was only 13yrs old, so I did not know better, he owned a gun shop so he knew better.
I ordered the package gun, ugly as hell, open sights, crappy scope, crappy rings. It arrived, goodness...beautiful! LOL, I was so proud of it. I shot it on and off over the years, killed coyotes, crows, no deer, lots of targets. It eventually fell out of favor and was resigned to the safe. A year or so back I found a place that I could get stretched to 620yds, what caliber!? Magnums, naaa, not a fan, 30/06, maybe, .243, hmmm. I tried some 100gr BTSP's and they sucked, I mean bad. JD suggested the 70gr bullets. The twist is 1/10.25" according to my measuring, so it's a touch slow. I asked on the reloading forum for some info and POP was kind enough to throw out some quickload with about 5000 powders on it for the 70gr BlitzKing, NBT's were no where to be found. I am a member of U-H4895-A - Users of H4895 Anynomus so I went with that and sent POP a quick PM. He sent me back QL data with modern charges, much warmer than what Hodgdon shows. I set my OAL at 2.650" and started working, all of a sudden, 41.0grs H4895 - 70gr Sierra BlitzKing, CCI-BR2 - WW Brass = WOW. I could only get out to 75yds so I went with it and over to the spot to 620yds. 11.25" up and I am ringing steel, blowing up water bottles, etc. I am going back over tomorrow so I figured I would recheck everything since I have not fired the rifle in 6 months or so. 100yds, wind right to left, 50 degrees, prone with bipod front and rear bag. Excuse the poor quality, it's a cell phone. After measuring and deductions it comes in at .225", this is not a fluke either. The holes around the target are from my nephews .22LR, he's learning. ![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
I have ALMOST sold, traded, or given this rifle away probably a dozen times before I set it up for this. It will NEVER EVER leave my possession.
Scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x Mil-Dot with Turrets, I got it for $150, I paid $211 for the rifle new, not bad for $360.![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
