For those who own one, what would you say is the utmost extreme range I can shoot this to?

Setup: Montana 1999, 24" barrel, Zeiss 3-9x40mm, shooting Federal 140grn Fusions. Average temp down here is in the 80's.

My thinking is, since it is based on the 308, and they are shot out to 1000yds, wouldnt the 7mm-08 be able to do it easier because its a 7mm and has a higher BC?

Yes. The cartridge is capable of good accuracy to 1,000 yards.

Now it's up to the rifle, ammo, scope and the marksman.

For me practical range is dependent upon the objective of the shot. If you are hunting game then the downrange energy of the bullet is the limiter. Paper is different.

The previous posters are spot-on. Bill has spoken wisely in limiting downrange shots on game to energy delivered. Though a projectile may punch a hole through an animal, eventuating in death, that doesn't mean the shooter will recover the animal when it runs into inhospitable climes.

(whoops, won't link direct, you'll have to choose Rifle, & scroll down to the 7-08 140gr. Fusion)

...call it 400-500yds, depending on your personal limits. Bullets are designed to perform over a range of velocities, say 3300-1600fps, closer you get to the "edges" more you have to worry. My experiences w/ the Fusions have been very positive, but I figger the graphs give me a pretty good excuse not to shoot game @ much over 400yds w/o a damngood excuse...

I am with the others, keep your energy in the 1250-1500ftlb range and that's about what I would call my max range too.

I also agree with this thinking.

I have shot Metallic Silhouette with a 7mm-08 and it worked very well. The "Ram" loads used a 175 gr SMK's at 2400 fps and did a great job of tipping over the 55 lb rams at 500 Meters (547 yds).

If you want to shoot long range you need dials and hand loads. Your rig is no better then it's weakest link, and these appear to be yours in the LR game.

Yep, I'd say your bullet is going to be holding you back. While a target elevation turret and some more X's on your scope would help you shoot better, the Conquest has pretty good turrets already if you figure out how to work them.

+1. If your hunting with it I would dang sure want to have that much energy. That would be my limiting factor. For paper it's different. If my memory serves me right a 140 BT and a 168CC are very compareable when it comes to trajectory and BC. So 1000 yards as a paper gun wouldn't be out of the question. If your planning on shooting long range turrets are a must have and lots of practice.

I am going to order a set of dials for my Zeiss once I come back from my two-week training and then drag out the 7mm08 to a range I can shoot from 100-600 and see what it can do with the stock rounds.

I really need to get into reloading :(

As a note, this is purely my hunting rig as I have plans for a solely paper punching rig coming up...

Actually 600 yards is really nothing for the 7mm-08 and a really good bullet, ie: 160 AB. I can hammer that out of mine like a walk in the park at that distance, and much further then that, but I keep those long shots for only shooting at steel.

Practice makes everything more common..... which makes you more confident in what you can accomplish.
