It seems like alot of you guys use Federal primers. I was raised on CCI.
What differences if any is there in primer brands? Is it the loading manual that you use or personal experiences?

I also use cci primers. i use the 250 magnum for my 270. i just think that they are more reliable than federal primers.

Tried them all but stucked with Federals. I kind of like the CCI because it is easy to clean the primer pocket.

I have Federal, Winchester, and Remington primers on my shelf right now. I have not ever had much opportunity to use CCI primers, although the limited use I have had has not been negative. I can say that for the majority of my pistol loading, the deciding factor was cost of a brick. I routinely switched between Winchester, Remington, and Federal in those days. I now use whatever is handy, unless I run into a problem. For the most part, I am using Federal rifle primers, because I found a good bunch of them for a great price ($15/1000). They also are working well, so I will not be switching out until they are gone. I have never, so far at least, had a problem with a primer, except when I loaded some hot 357Mag loads with H110, and picked up the wrong primer pack, putting regular small pistol primers in them instead of mag primers. No real problems, just not very accurate, and a lot of unburned powder in the barrel, on the outside of the revolver, and on my hands. Looked like I was shooting FFFg!

Anyone using MagTech primers? How are they?

I never use CCI. The cci 200 is the "coldest" primer out there. I have seen 200 fps diff between them and Winchester.

I like Federal Gold Metal Match primers. I have had the greatest consistencies and the best groups!!!

I have and use (in order of preference)

1)Fed Gold Metal Match
2)Winch WLR
3)CCI Bench Rest
4)Remington

I get the best results with the Fed GMM in some calibers and WLR in others. The CCI's do best in my 7MM-08's and the Fed GMM Mag's work best in my 300 Win Mag.

BTW, the Fed mag's also work best in my Encore 308 barrel (15") not sure why, but I've compared them to all my other primers and there is no comparison. Go figure

I use only WLRM. I tried all of the others over the years, and found that the winchester gave the best accuracy overall of all of the brands that I tried. That's why I have 10,000 of them in the same lot number.

I'm something of an informal accuracy nut -- meaning that I want to squeeze every bit of accuracy I can out of my 2 hunting rifles, which are mostly unmodified factory jobs (I have a pre-64 Mod. 70 Featherweight in .270 Win, which I put a plastic stock on, and a Ruger 77 stainless in .338, which I put a Timney trigger on). Both of these are better than 1 MOA, with the right loads.

I tried CCI BR2 primers (their bench rest, large rifle offering) in the .270 figuring I could improve accuracy, but gave up on it when I experienced hang fires, which happened first and repeatedly with W-760, and every once in awhile with other powders (in the course of one very, very long afternoon). I believe the guys who say that the CCI primers are colder than others, and have switched to Winchester's WLR primer for my .270. I have never used anything other than WLRM primers in the .338.

I am using the CCI BR2 primers in my 6 mm Rem, and have had no problems whatsoever with them in this cartridge. And this rifle (customized, built on Model 98 Mauser) is an absolute tack driver.

My guess is that powder density played a role in my woes, and that W-760 is just hard to ignite. I'm wide open to other explanations, though I don't think I'll be using CCI primers again once I've used up my current supply in the 6 mm (I get comparable accuracy in it from WLR primers, so why screw around?).

I have always used Federal 210's and 215's. However, I am now "switching over' to the match versions of both.

Brian,

I've used mostly BR2's in everything. I recently was given a .300RUM that I imediatly loaded for with the BR2's. Not a good selection, as I too had serious hang-fire issues. I've swithec to the Federals as recommended and issue resolved.
Still using the CCI's in most everything else !!

Not trying to spike the ball.In my STW load I have tighter groups with CCI 250 Mag primers than with the Federal 215 GMM primers. Also been told the CCI is hotter than the Federal 215.

Hottest Primer marketed at this time is the WLRM, closely followed by the 215 Federal. The Remington sits next with CCI following up as last. This is from actual velocities read from a minimum of 20 shots with the identiacl case, bullet and powder charge, but the different primer. I tested them in the 30-06 and the 340 Weatherby, and results were basically the same. I use them all, since each seems to have their "niche" Regards, Eagleye.

Dead on accurate statement!

I have used more Fed 210's and 215's then anythign. Lately though, have been using quite a bit of CCI BR-2's in my 25-06 and 22-250 220 swift 243 win calibers. I have never experienced a huge velocity loss with them, and surely never experienced any accuracy problems with them. In most cases, they have the best groups. Thats why I'll continue to fork out over $3.00 per 100 for them. They are "THE" primer in my 25-06. Just for fun, I worked up a load with the CCI BR-2, large rifle in my 300 RUM with H1000 and 200g AB. WHen I loaded them up down home it was about 60 degres. They shot great, 1.5" at 300 yards. I never experienece any hangfires of any kind at this temperature. When I took them up elk hunting in 0 degree and colder weather, I had hangfires on the elk I shot. It was my own fault though and I knew to expect it, I should have known better. I haven't shot any Rem's and I think I've only went through 1 box of Win's in an old savage 270 WSM that wasn't worth a hoot anyways. I use to load the CCI 250 mag in my old 7mm and 300 mags. However when I ran out, I switched to the Fed 215 for hotter ignition. So pretty much its always been federal or CCI for me, but I think for Mags I'll use the Fed 215, usually not the match, and for standard calibers I'll use the CCI BR-2. But testing never hurts.
