I started working with the 220 Speer in my 358 Win and I found a load that shoots really good and while I have not chrono'd it yet that shoulder test shows good speed also.

Ruger Hawkeye 358 Win 22" barrel

WW Brass
WLR Primer
Speer 220 .358" FP
IMR 3031 - 47.5grs

No weird signs, heavy bolt, shiny spots, etc.....am I on thin ice?

Thanks

Looks safe and sedate to me, Heath.

How is case compression Heath? Is it pretty easy to get it all in there?

It's pretty full but it's not terrible. After some light taps I don't get any crunchy crunch when seating. I have an old Speer manual that shows 49grs as max, no clue how you would get 49grs in there honestly.

It's been hovering right around 1" @ 120yds and it really seems to be spitting them out. If it would ever stop raining I'm going to throw a couple across the screens to see what fps I'm getting.

That seems like excellent speed for that 220 Speer. I've neglected my 358 quite a lot. Might have to look at trying your load out. I've got a slew of the 220's.

Heath just curious, have you tried a drop tube to settle the powder? it seems to stack tighter in the case when you use a drop tube for loads that are filling up the case.

Nope no drop tube.

I pour in a funnel so that the powder swirls it's way in, then I give it a few quick snaps with my finger on the base and seat right to the middle of the cannalure.

I neglect my 358 Win a lot and I don't know why. It doesn't shoot anything bad, shoots most combos really good, handles well and makes critters leak important fluids in large amounts for the short distances they travel.

That's exactly the same MO my 358 exhibits. Just kills stuff dead and does it with alot of blood and not too much recoil either...

Dang, now I feel ashamed I haven't even shot mine in a year or more..

The .358 Win tends to be accurate in most rifles. The cartridge is not difficult to load, and it is a powerhouse to the limit of its range. It qualifies as one of my favourite cartridges.

I don't shoot my 358 Win much either, no clue why. The last few rifle deer I have killed have been with smaller cals so I made this the year of 35 and up, so I've taken 2 different 35 Rem, my 358 Win and my 45/70 to the field. The deer have made this the year of you won't see a buck to shoot so that has been a problem.
