Range Day #2

Scotty must be on a mission or he would be all over this post like white on rice. I hope all is well since last I heard from him he was in the field training.

Looks great Rodger, I would run that 66 gr CFE 223 load and not look back, 2900 fps and that kind of accuracy is really great.

If you get a chance maybe you could post a picture of the standard Whelen next to the AI version both seated with the Accubonds. Would be neat to see what they look like side by side.

I'm with Gerry. That 66 CFE load is amazing, great speed and super accuracy. Those Meotpa scopes are also amazing. I know I am very pleased with mine.

I'll third Gerry and Bill here. I'd be all over that 66 grain load of CFE223. Buy up all the bullets you can. That load will do everything. Seeing that makes me fairly excited to try 200's again in my Whelen. Since I've got the Newton I might as well work with the 200's some.

Great shooting Rodger. That sounds like everything went excellent.

Oh and I was on leave in NY with the kids. U.S. Old folks don't get many missions unless it is supervising training.....

The 66gr CFE223 load will be tested again to make sure it is repeatable.
Scotty I'm glad you old folks get to train the kids and don't have to worry about dangerous missions any more. I think you earned that privilege.

Well, I'm not all that old to be honest and enjoy the work...

Get that 66 grain load out again buddy. Can't wait to see what it does.

How is CFE 223 when it comes to being temperature stable? I have heard it may not be as bad as some older ball powders in that respect.

I just looked it up on Hodgdons site and CFE223 is not an Extreme powder. Whereas H322 is listed as one. I was wrong when I first posted.

Either way, it seems like it is really a decent one for the Whelen with 200's. Certainly is fast.

The day I shot the groups with CFE223 it was 82 degrees in the shade and a blister in the sun. I'll find out this fall if it's temp sensitive or not. Just wish the H322 hadn't showed pressure signs or it could have been two weak cases I don't know since I can't test for pressure but QL says they were good But then I didn't have my H2O cap and was going by QL default pressure settings.
