Well, we were finally able to get down to Brian's house this past Saturday. I had my other gift for my wife down there. I actually had not seen it to this point, but man, the pictures made it look nice and it was ever nicer in person. Brian, Brandon (son) and me mounted up a rail, some Leupold QRW's and a Minox ZA5 2-10 on it. Then we walked inside and presented it to her.. I figured it was time Lori had a proper rifle for hunting.
a couple other glamour shots..
The next day, Brian and I were able to find some grey box Winchester 120 Positive Expanding Points to run through the rifle, just to get a decent zero on the rifle and let Lori get aquainted with her new Model 70.
Here are her first three shots out of the rifle with the factory ammo. She did pretty well for never having touched it before.
Pretty excited to try the 115 BT's out of the rifle. Probably going to work with them a little today. Or at least get some loaded up and ready for the range.
My son was also finally able to fire his little 7x57 Mauser for the first time as well. He did okay for his first time out with it. By the end of the day, he was banging the steel out at 300 yards without too much trouble..
I was also able to refine the zero on my 270WSM with 150 PT's at 300 yards. Fired the 1st two shots.
Made the dope change on the scope and fired the 3rd... Well, it went about 1.5ft low and left alot? I put the rifle down and tried to figure out what was going on.. After about ten minutes of stewing on it, I remembered, I was reminded that you can't use 100 yard values at 300! Still trying to get my feet under me I guess..
Well, I uncorrected what I did the first time and fired these 3..
I think that'll work okay for my backup elk rifle.. Those 150's scoot out around 3130 out of my rifle and shoot excellent..
We were also luck enough to shoot Tom's 260AI. Man, what a pleasure that rifle is. It is built on a Model 70 action with a barrel heavy enough that could be used as a 1 ton axle if you needed to!
It is accurate!
Then we broke out the water jugs. My son wanted to put the 140 BT into jugs and see how his deer bullet looks from a short range hit from the Mauser.

The 140 BT held up really well. That is a near full on muzzle velocity hit at about 10ft and it retained about 85 grains. The core did slip, but for deer and such, I don't see anything sneaking away with one of them in the lungs...
My wife wanted to get in on the action with her 25-06 too, so we tried out the Winchester factory ammo..

My son took another turn at the jugs with the 270WSM and the 150 PT's. Well, those turned out the prettiest PT recovery yet, still had the lead cap on the nose and man, that bullet went 5 jugs right off the end of the muzzle which is about what a 300 mag does with a 200 PT... Pretty impressive. Weight about 95 grains outta the jugs

Well, now Tom and Brian broke out the tannerite for some shooting. Lori got to be the Gunner on these. I gotta say, it was pretty cool to see her sending phone books and water jugs into orbit!
Here was one of the older jugs of Tannerite that was mixed from a previous batch.. It didn't detonate.. We thought she missed till we looked and saw she hit it square. Just no bang

Here was her first explosion with the 260 AI..

Then the grand finale with her 25-06

Well, that was a good range Day. Lori and Brandon got acquainted with their new rifles and we had a good time blowing some stuff up!
