Finally took my worked up loads to the range to see if they shot accurately. The 270 Wby Ultralight , the 340 Wby with the wood stock and a 243 Vanguard I just put a boyd's thumbhole stock on.
The 340 was dissapointing but the stock wasn't bedded and I even had to put a washer under the front screw to make it fit . I put the old ugly synthetic back on it to make sure my loads were good and if they are I'll bed it. about 5" with the wood stock.
The 270 Wby ultralight I bought from CAhunter shot very well with IMR 7828 and the 140gr. AccuBond at 3266 FPS. .7"
The 243 impressed me with the 87 gr. Berger VLD hunting bullets at .43" .View attachment range 7-23-11 001.JPGrange 7-23-11 002.JPGView attachment range 7-23-11 003.JPG
It's nice to get out. It's 95 degrees now but it was 20 degrees cooler this morning at the range.

Greg,

The 243 Win and 270 Wby look good.
What is the load(s) you are shooting in the 340 Wby?

JD338

Jim, I'm using 91 grs of RL22, CCI 250 primers, 225 gr. Nos. A/B, CL 2.825", OAL 3.7" for 3151 Avg fps 3145-3163-3145
It shades my 338RUM at 3116 fps. with the same bullet. I was surprised because of the smaller case but it seems to handle the pressure with no problem even though I am a little hot on my load.
Greg

Greg,

Better quality brass will allow for higher pressures while yielding longer case life.

Have you considered the 250 gr AB?

Greg,

The 340 will come once you've had opportunity to work with it. It is encouraging, however, to see what is happening with the 270 Wby and the 243.

Wow Greg, you are getting about 60 fps more velocity with the .340, 225 gr Partition than I was getting with IMR7828. Those 225 Partition bullets shoot really accurately in my Mark V rifle and should in yours also when you get it proparly bedded into the stock. Keep us posted on that as you make progress with the bedding.

Greg

Yup looks like bedding is necessary just proves that washers do not make good bedding material. I have used copper shim stock in the past and it works pretty good. At least you only have one to bed rather than three, the other two did great!

Greg, it looks like the game in CA and Id are in real trouble this year, an from a long ways off, with your 270'bee! I suspect bedding issues with the 340, as well. Good news is, those type of things are fairly easily remedied. Good shooting!

On another note, are you going to Idaho again this fall for muley/elk? One of these years I'm going to try that!

Great shooting Greg. That 270WBY is very impressive and those 140's at over 3200 should work pretty well. I took one bull elk with them in my 270WSM and they worked pretty decent.

Seems like that 340 will get with the program once the bedding is fixed up, and like Dubyam said, it only takes a little time and the work is usually really worth it. That 340 is one cool cat though. Very impressive 338!

Are you done with load work for the 270 or are you still working with any different loads? Great rifle, seems like one awesome mountain rifle. Be hard to top it for any hunting in Idaho. Scotty

Greg glad to see you started with 7828. What oal are you using? Ill check my load data for you but looks good. Hope you like the rifle!
