I like shooting this piece of history even if some days don’t go as well as hoped. If the first shot goes like this one did I shouldn’t need the other two anyway. This load has put 5 under an inch before.
Pre 64 30.06 is as ready for opening day as it’s going to get.

Excellent! (y)

Not a match rifle, but it will take game just fine.

Enjoy hunting with the ol' gal.

All that's left to be ready for opening is to give your knives a final touch up.

That rifle/load combination in your hands will deliver the goods when put to the test. Good show!

Rich, it was shooting better a few weeks ago. I assumed you checked all the screws and the like ? You will do fine with it for hunting.

Could be the guy pulling the trigger.
I scrubbed the barrel and the first group was right near an inch which is fine for me.

I used to do a little guiding when the ranch I work on used to do some pay hunts. It always amazed me when it came time to check the rifles that some folks simply couldn’t shoot very well.

I’ve seen folks who couldn’t keep it in a 6” circle for three shots at 100 yards merely stand up from the bench and say “good enough.” Not to knock magnums but it was typically those shooting 7mm and .300 magnums who suffered the larger groups. Nearly everyone who showed up with a .30-06, .308 or .270 could shoot 1-1.5” groups at 100 yards.

Although we all like to shoot little bitty groups, this group you shot is more than good enough for hunting.
