I am going to be reloading for this hunting season coming up, and settled on the nosler 150gr e-tip. I am using Winchester magnum primers and hodgens H4350 powder.

My question is, I was going to start with a charge of 58gr and work up. What do you think, safe starting point?

Welcome aboard,DSkjeie. Always glad to welcome new people willing to share their experience. It is a good practise to drop back five to ten percent from maximum charge. While 58 grains would be a safe starting load, I'd be inclined to make a set of three charges to test at 57 grains, 59 grains and 61 grains (per QL).

Code:
Cartridge : 7 mm Rem. Mag.(SAAMI)
Bullet : .284, 150, Nosler E-Tip 59426
Useable Case Capaci: 72.057 grain H2O = 4.679 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.290 inch = 83.57 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4350

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

I load for 2 different 7mm mags. I use IMR4350 powder & find it very accurate. I use 160gr ABs.
I believe H 4350 would do a beck of a job for you!!

Blessings
Dan

58 grains is good, you will probably hit max around 62 or 3. I load 160 PT's, with 61 gr of H 4350 with no problems ever.

Thanks for all the info. I have read a lot on the 7mm and just wanted verification that I was on the right track. I will be sure to report back, it won't be for a bit but I will do

I have a bunch of Federal once fired brass and it is very soft stuff. I am going to work up a load myself with the 150 NBT and IMR 4350 in this 7mm mag but nowhere near max, just to get some use/practice out of this brass. I don't remember right now what my load was but back in '84 I used the 150 Partition in a 24" 7mm Rem mag and IMR 4350. It was not a hot load and now I know was not going as fast as the Manual said, but it was scary accurate. Now, I am one of those that want all the accuracy I can get ( and most of the time all the speed I can get too, safely of course!) but I shot a nice whitetail about 15yds from my ladder stand with that load, ha. Better to have and not need....have a ball Pard!

Quick question Drmike. I see in your QL data you used a 24" barrel, my rem 700sps dm is a 26" barrel. How much of a difference will that make on the pressures?

About 50 to 70 fps.

Well with starting a new job it has taken me a bit. However I got my test/work up loads loaded. Hoping to get out to see what they do this weekend.

Always exciting to see a set of test loads ready to go. The 7 RM is a pretty cartridge; the E-Tip is just perfect to set it off.

Looking forward to your range results.

The 150 gr E-Tip is an accurate bullet. Best results seem to be at .100" off the lands.

I did a poor man measurement by seating a bullet long in a slightly over sized bullet, then slowly chambering the round (with out a primer) in the rifle.

It measured 3.355" and I have set my COAL at 3.260" for the first round of testing. When I find the best charge at 3.260" I will then play with the COAL to dial it in.

I like the old 7 mag. I've been loading it since about 1982 in the same rifle. I load IMR 4350 and get excellent accuracy when I work up my loads and seating depths.
I would obtain a set of bullet comparators for 7mm. These are cheap for what they do for you. Actually you only use the one comparator and dial calipers but you buy them in a set that cover several calibers.
These measure the ogive of the bullet and not the OAL. The bullet tip often gives varying measurements. All my measurements are from the ogive to the rifling.
I see you have a notebook, good, I keep notebooks also. But I now use targets with 3 different targets and space for data. After shooting these are all scanned into my computer then the hardcopies are stored in a notebook.
These targets allow you to see the results of any changes you make for comparison.
Here is the link for the free target and following is an example.

That's good shooting.
Me thinks you found your load. :)

Is that crimped?

Yes I put a bit of a crimp on them using lee factory crimp die.

How much of a crimp should be put on these loads?

I'd probably start with a 1/4 turn after it meets resistance but you never really know till you shoot them.

Your ammo looks great though.

Darkhorse,

That is some fine riflery. You definitely have a good load in hand. I should imagine that deer are in trouble in GA.
