Rifle for Dylann

Very handsome, David. That would be a most handsome rifle for Dylann, Scotty. I wonder if there is any room for negotiating, especially since David is willing to do break-in and perhaps even some hunting (just to verify that it works properly, of course.

Danged David.. I tell ya. It doesn't take long around this place for rifles to start popping up. I swear, sometimes I just think about a certain rifle and you all start posting about them and get me fired up.

That does have some good wood on it. Man, what to do, what to do....

What to do? What to do? Buy the danged thing, Scotty. Order a laminate stock that you can whack down to an acceptable size and rejoice in your good fortune!

The only part of the equation is, I wonder if it's still in the store???

Now if it is there Scotty I promise to lovingly clean it completely from end to end before mounting an optic on it for a little barrel break-in. Even though it probably does not need it done in this manner, I promise to shoot and clean for ten shots, then shoot three and clean for the next eighteen rounds. Always taking time between each shot as to never warm the barrel more than body temperature. I will purchase a snap-cap dummy round so that I can sit in front of the TV while dreaming of hunting sheep in far off places, and dry fire it over and over again to make sure the trigger gets broken in nicely prior to the gunsmith working his magic on it. By hand I will apply several coats of Birchwood Casey gunstock wax to the stock to further protect the finish and to bring out the warmth of this really nice piece of walnut. I also promise to always wear a bib of some type so as to keep my own drool off of this fine piece of American art-work!
This is the least I can do for one of our fine servicemen who takes time away from their family to defend our rights and our country.

In my case, they'll be prying it from my cold, dead hands. I hope to leave the grandchildren a whole passel of rifles.

Are you certain you want a 280AI, David? Perhaps you should have a 7X57?

There you go Mike. I didn't coat it too thick did I??

7mm-08 is a compact or a 7x57 would be good, a 6.5x55 would be great too. I have to say this though, a Rem 700 in 260 Rem would be really nice too :)

I didn't read all of this...just the first post so if I'm behind the curve just ignore this.

You mentioned the carbine version....for that barrel length the 308 Win. is the best fit...loaded with 125 Accubonds it's pretty fast, flat, and low recoil...the 7mm-08 and 243 lose a lot of speed in short barrels...the 308 loses some, but not near as much in my experience.

I'm sure you probably knew that...but thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't considered the 125 grain bullets a 30 caliber option.

Gerry nice try but you know he won't get a Remington. I love the idea of the 6.5 Swede and the 7 X57 a close second. The 6.5 he has more bullet options for low recoil.

I have to try though  I do think the 6.5x55 would be a great choice, light recoil great killing power and also a classic round.

Rest a rifle in the crook of her arm. The trigger finger should be comfortably crooked at the trigger. Of course, you can measure with a tape and do the same thing. Any gun store will likely have a proper rule with sliding hole for measuring. However, you can easily do the measuring yourself.
Doc, this can work, but sometimes it doesn't do too well. Truth is, unless you shoot from the crook of your arm, you may not get a good fit. The shotgun  crowd has made much more of a science out of stock fit, but their methods can be used on rifles to a certain extent. I'm not an authority, and so I'll leave off actual advice. I know there are some good tutorials out there (also some misleading material). Some factors that can play in are upper arm length, shoulder muscle size and shoulder width, neck length, comfortable cheek weld position - things like that. For a couple of the younger folks I worked with, one way to tell was the measure between the back of the thumb(doesn't work on thumbhole stocks!) and flesh on the cheek at the top of the comb. They need to be at least an inch or so apart. Don't want the face to bump into the recoiling thumb.
I read this whole thing and still don't know if I made any sense. Just be a little careful shortening to fit the "crook of the arm" rule I guess. :? Hope it's food for thought if nothing else.

I got my son a 7-08 for Christmas... great choice.

Light recoil and good trajectory...and does great in a 20" barrel. No need for a longer barrel in my opinion.

I would agree as well, the 260, 7mm-08, 6.5x55 and 7x57 would all do well in a shorter barrel.

Yep and to top it off. He needs something different!!

+1 on the Swede. In a M70 Featherweight it would be perfect. The Swede is a mouse that roars. A buddy of mine killed a 180class Bighorn at 427yds a couple of years ago.
Scotty I've seen Featherweight stocks for about 100$. I'd cut one and stash one for later. Matter of fact I might do the same. Thanks for the idea! 8)

So did ya come up with her LOP Scotty ? Not trying to be an enabler  but she would be all smiles with this one below! this is the 7MM08 compact and not many Model 70's around lately that I have seen!

I haven't measured the LOP yet, but we did look at some colors and she likes Plum and Tawny brown..

RR665, I don't mind a 308, but I think I'd rather have a 7mm or 6.5.
