Rifle for Dylann

All great ideas. I am pretty sure it'll be a Featherweight rifle, 7-08, 7x57, 6.5 Swede, etc.. Any of them would be fine. I'd love to have find a 6.5 Swede Featherweight, but they want a fortune for them. We shall see, I am not buying tomorrow, so I have some time to look. I just showed her some laminates and she liked the different colors (what 10 year old doesn't though).

6.5x55 in an M70 FWT is a sa-WEET little rifle to own. My father has one that Scotty thinks he can swindle...er...negotiate on. Ha! When Dad's done with it, it's not traveling far, I can tell you that!

That 7x57 is a sweetheart, Scotty. If your budget permits is, you will really have a hard time doing better than that. Unless you want to give the poor girl a 243 to start, but geez.....why do that when a 7x57 is out there just ready and waiting???

Scotty,
You've got us all looking now! Not sure if you saw this one:

Model 70 Featherweight Compact 7-08. 13" LOP. 6 1/2 pounds. No reserve. She deserves new!
Not a concern for you today, but often as we get into advanced years it is the daughter who come through with care, concern, visits, and assistance.

Not a bad price for that sweetheart.

Scotty,
I know that you have a marriage with Winchester Rifles. A question that comes to mind is this, are you buying this you? I would encourage you to get what she would want even if that required you to buy a Remington model 7 chambered in a 260 Remington or 7mm-08 or a Muddygirl :p
Keith

Another one to consider is the Steyr mountain rifle in 6.5. I stupidly passed on one a while ago and wish I hadn't.

I love my model 70's, and the Steyr wasn't the prettiest rifle in the rack, but it just felt good in the hand and seemed to be a workhorse of a rifle.

My Anna LOVES her Marlin XS-7 7mm-08. Shoot great also.

Keith, you guys are great but every time I've bought another brand rifle they never want them after a few years. I'm sticking with Winchesters for now. My daughter doesn't know enough now about rifles, so I'd be scared she'd fall in love with the first pink Savage she laid her eyes on!

Chances are they will inherit a rifle or two when I can't see, hear, feel or smell, so I'd like to keep them the same if I can. Ease of operation! Ha!

Besides, we wouldn't let our children have inferior toys or inferior meals. Why would we want them to have inferior rifles?

I vote for the featherweight that can be grown into. Big fan of the 7-08 as well. I had one once, but had to sell it as it was a Remington.

I was kinda thinking the same thing Mike. If our children said they liked the looks of crack would we support them.. NOOOOOOO, we'd steer them down the correct path. Same for letting a kid like Remingtons..

Well said, Scotty; well said, indeed. It is just that serious.

Jake, you bring up a great point. I have really been enjoying working with my son's 7x57. I always thought they were sorta slow. Not exactly the case. 140's at nearly 3K, 150's at the high 2800's and 160 somewhere a touch less. The bullets we have now, along with the newer powder really allow that 7-08 and 7x57 to act much bigger than they ever have. Something pretty neat about that sorta performance. The other part is the rifles they are housed in. A little Featherweight or similar rifle packs so well all day on the mountain and really offer the hunter alot of performance. I am not planning on giving up any of my bigger rifles, but the smaller cartridges are sneaking up on me.

But the smaller cartridges are sneaking up on me.  It's nice to shoot a surgical scalpel all day and not get beat up. What the smaller calibers lack in speed they make up for in accuracy most of the time and like Scotty said you take the older ones that were handicap by low pressure actions and put them in a modern high pressure steel action and they perform a lot better than expected.

Fotis, I love that Marlin!

Very accurate and you can paint it girlish colors. Then if she does not take to shooting sell it.If she does upgrade her to whatever.

so you want to trade that Remington 700 in 35 Whelen? I have a nice Savage 99 .308 that would be a nice fit.

This coming from a guy who shoots Savage's. Pffffff come on man.

My nephew's Marlin XS-7 in 7mm-08 Youth model is very impressive. We're looking for a full-size stock for it now.

I think the 7mm-08 is a great round for your intentions. That 120gr BT can be loaded down to a very comfortable level and it will still take those puny Virginia and SC WTs with aplomb.

I feel like I may be bucking the trend. Some people may consider a Remington Model 7 CDL an inferior rifle. That is definitely not my opinion. Last summer I purchased a Remington Model 7 CDL chambered in a 260 Remington. With that rifle I am able to routinely able to get a 5 shot group in a 1.25" square at 125 yds.

I would also encourage you to think more about a 20" barrel. For a young shooter a shorter barrel is very nice. As an after thought, what about a Weatherby Vanguard youth? In that option, you can add shims to adjust LOP to adjust for growth
Keith
P.S. I have seen a pink rifle that would make many of us jealous!
