I dont get to go to Butner very often - stay pretty busy @ RifleWorx - But I have a blast the few times a year I get to go!!!!

I shoot the Berger 190VLD Hunt in this rig @ 3058fps. - That gives Me enough energy to anchor a Whitetail a LONG WAYS AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Folks say the 300WSM falls short to the 300Win.Mag but I sure cant tell by the stats from this rig -

Being "Old School," I usually shoot heavy for calibre bullets. There is enough mass on target to penetrate with massive hydrostatic disruption. I would imagine that the 190 grain Berger would work very well. I've recently been working with 200 grain Sierra GKs with excellent accuracy and good velocities.

I just got rid of a 300 Win Mag in order to step up to a 300WSM. Everything I can read and find puts it squarely on par with the WM. Plus it will round out my little collection. Scotty

I have not got into the short mags yet, not saying they are not fine cartridges they are without question. My reasoning is only for being able to buy more common ammo in some of the small towns close to the area's I hunt in. If I forget my 300 WM ammo or my 30-06 ammo I know I can get some without question. It will not be as good as my handloads but it would suit the purpose required within reason. If we fast foreward a few years the 300 WSM will also be easy to find in the small towns not quite yet but the day is geting closer and closer.
