I had a two sub 1/2 min groups yesterday with my 7mm STW using RL-19 and older 175 gr Hornady PSP, had two more good groups today with the 160 AB and the 175 Pt. Problem is I don't have a manual showing RL-19 data. I am at 68 gr, with the 175gr. bullets and 71 with the 160's. Any body help me with maximum load data and estimated velocities. Thanks!

elkman , here is quickload info for a 7STW , 24 " bbl, rated at 66717PSI

160accubond # 54932 , RL19 powder , max 73.9 grains ,91.7% case fill ,3069 FPS,66624PSI

175 Partition #35645, RL19 powder , max 72.7 grains ,89.6% case fill , 2950FPS ,66484PSI

175 Hornady sp # 2850, RL19 powder , max 73.1 grains, 89.4% case fill ,2952 FPS,66619PSI

hope this helps . JIm

thanks a lot Jim, makes me feel better about the load, I had a .334 group this morning, with 71 and the 160. No pressure signs so maybe I will bump it up another grain or two. My BDC turrent is set for 3100 fps. I have been fussing with this for quite a while, wrote Nosler regarding their powder type for the custom line of ammo and they suggested the RL-19. Apparently a great suggestion. I am using Nosler and Remington cases (juries out on the most accurate case) but this group was shot with Nosler.

who makes nosler brass ? I've never measure nosler brass . I have norma , rem , win , fed ,and frontier . what I measured from the worst to best . frontier , fed ,rem ,win , and norma . norma was way , way , better than the others , but it's price was double or so too . so once again , you get what you pay for . Jim

Bill, glad to see you have finally broken down to try some Alliant powder! Seems like it is working good for you. I use Rl19 exclusively in my 338WM and it never fails to perform really well. Looking forward to hearing what you end up with your rifle. Sounds like it has turned a corner. You are getting good accuracy and the speed will come as you start nudging it up some. Scotty

Hi Elkman, I have nothing against RL19 but I think there are powders more appropriate for the 7STW in 160gr- 175gr bullet range. I would look at using RL 25, H1000 or the powder I'm using at the moment VVN-570. I'm shooting a Ruger #1B 26" barreled rifle and am consistently grouping 1.75" at my 250 meter zero.
My load: 160gr AccuBond, R-P brass, WLRM primer, 81.0gr VVN-570, 3.65oal @ 3050fps and Quick Load estimate this load at 95.3% load density 3048fps & 53421psi

Quick Load est. for 160gr AccuBond:
RL-25 95% load den., 75.9gr, 3051fps & 58378psi
H 1000 98.5% LD, 78.6gr, 33056fps & 58378psi
RL 19 88.7% LD, 71.5gr, 3047fps & 60563psi
IMR 7828 93.8% LD, 73.5gr, 3067fps & 58378psi

Don't get me wrong as I think RL 19 is a great powder, it's just I think the case capacity of the 7STW lends itself to slower powders, anyway thats my 2 cents worth

I didn't post the history of my quest for this load but I have used H-1000 for several years. In addition I have tried RL-22, H-4831, H-4350, three different brands of cases, and 7 different bullets. I realize that a slower powder should be better but am getting 80% load density with the 160's the best consistent groups I have seen. Thanks so much for the info.

I am sure it will work! Heck, as long as the ballistics is worked out, a couple of inches out far is about all you will have to contend with. Looking forward to seeing the 7WSM work when we come out to Oregon. Hopefully I can get Brian to carry it some. It is a heckuva good shooter. 160's at 3100 should be good medicine! Scotty

You guys keep me posted on the success of your elk hunt in Oregon. Bill, I am glad that you are finally finding a sweet accuracy and velocity spot for that 7mm STW. It has been a long quest!

Thanks all for the support. I will be leaving in a couple of days but wind allowing will range check at 500 or so yards in the morning. I want to range check my BDC reticle and see what compensation I need to make for the slightly slower bullet. I have have sdjusted the elevation slightly at 300 and want to check.
I shot the 40 year old 300 mag today. First two were in the same hole and the third just to the right. I have made few adjustments to that rifle in many years. Did also take some field position shots at milk jugs at 275 but was just off enough to miss them. I was kneeling and prone on very hard ground for my old elbows. Am ready to go !!

Bill,

That looks to be some awesome loads you're working with. Eighty percent load density isn't bad at all in the 7 STW.

Bill, My BIL just shot a big 5 point bull in the Oregon-Metolius GMA (from an archery stand) a couple weeks ago. He said that it was really warm and dry where he was at. He saw bulls everyday for a week.

I hope that you have good luck also.
Charlie

Managed a range check of my BDC turrent today. Was able to go out to 450 yards. Set up was a foam pad, bipod on the dirt and wooden block and bags at the rear, slightly downhill. Three shots, one in the 10 ring, one in the 9 ring and one out about 4 inches, I forgot which ring number. I was using a 100 yard standard small bore target. The dail is apparently good to go for at least 500 if necessry. I am feeling confident in the consistency of the STW now.

Leaving wednesday for scouting trip in NE Oregon then on to my first elk hunt of the season in western wyoming. Good luck all.

Is RL-19 any good with 168gr bullets? IMR 4350 works good for me now - just looking for a new powder to toy with.
