Ok, so I was given 2 lbs. of unopened RL17 powder today.

What can I load with it??

Currently loading:

.257 AI
7mm-08
.300 SAV
.243 WSSM
300 WSM
.338 WM

It should do real well in the 7-08 and is a favorite of mine in the 300WSM. Never loaded the 257AI, but I imagine it should be worth a try. I like RL15 in the 300 Savage and RL19 in the 338 WM. Let us know how your loads turn out, even if they aren't up to expectations.

It will work very well in your 300WSM (especially with light for calibre bullets), 7mm-08, 338WM and 243 WSSM. I would imagine you will find it works well in the 257 AI as well.

It's good in the 7mm-08 with 140's, but amazing in the 7mm-08 with 162 hornady a-maxes.

The .243 WSSM should be good with mid-weight bullets. I haven't tried it- just looking at load data and presuming.

It's ok in the .338 WM with up to 225 grain bullets, but not any better than H4350, Hunter, and RL-19. Maybe not even as good as those three.

It might, and I mean might, be worth a shot in the 300 Savage if you want to shoot heavier bullets through it for some reason. There are guys getting really good velocity with their .308 Winchesters and 200+ grain bullets; and the .308 doesn't have a whole lot more capacity than the 300 Savage. Although I really doubt that that's an application you had in mind...

Edit: I opened this tab awhile ago and just now got around to submitting that response. Looks like DrMike already covered everything I said, so I guess I'm just seconding what he has to say.

I t gave me some outstanding velocities in the 338 Win Mag but accuracy was not there.

I'd swap it for some H4831.

...to each his own, I guess...

...I use RL-17 almost exclusively in .25 WSSM, .300 WSM, & .325 WSM, good ES/SD's, very good accuracy, generally speaking, higher chrono'd velocities, no problems w/ temp. sensitivity.

I forgot I tried it in my 30-06. Again great velocities but no accuracy in my rifle.

So far it is my powder of choice for 25-284 and 7x57AI so should be good in 257AI.

Supposed to be made for short magnums and use load data same as imr 4350.

my 30-06 loved rl-17 with the 168 TTSX. Wasn't smoking fast but got 2820fps and I think it was 1/2MOA. can't remeber now. but my savage 116 loves that load.

I have wondered many times about powders, bullets, and even cartridges that just didn't work out for me. I have to believe it has something to do with my approach to the use of these things. I strongly suspect I am in good company.

Does anyone have the software to give me load data for

I think I can find the wssm data online.

It looks as if there are far superior powders than RL17.

That is truly disappointing.... Well, I guess I will try and trade it with some buddies here locally. Or, try it in the .243 WSSM.

I don't think that 42k psi is a true working maximum pressure for that cartridge, is it? The velocities in the 52-55k psi range look more indicative of the cartridge's capabilities.

Ok,,, I was not even looking at the pressures... DUH! This is a modern HOWA action. I should be able to load up to 55,000 PSI, easily... Hell, a .308 is loaded to 60K correct?????

Not sure why that is disappointing? The 17 showed better max velocity for that rifle than all
the other powders listed.
