Well it's been a rough one in Maryland so far, rain, sleet, fog and more rain, oh yeah and a mild dose of food poisoning. The only good day was Monday, I was still sick and I saw 12 deer but none that I could shoot, all were out of range for the 12ga since I was hunting in an area that is shotgun only. Didn't go out Tuesday because of rain and sleet mix and still sick but feeling better. Today I woke up to more rain so I decided to do some earns and took the Whelen along just in case it stopped which it slowed up enough for me to head to the Mountains. The Whelen got wet and I got damp but the sun came out and cleared off. The deer were bedded in heavy cover and not moving I only saw 6 other hunters trucks and heard no shots. I was hunting on public land of 1000 acres and there is usually a hunter behind every tree.
I climbed to the top of the ridge and started looking for places they would bed.
Found plenty of rubs and scrapes but no deer.
Here's a few pics of the area I was hunting in. No great scenery but typical of the area I hunt.
Having problems down loading the pics but will load them as soon as I get it figured out.
Got them loaded.

I didn't see any pictures? Hopefully its not my computer again. Hopefully the weather will change and you can get out again. Like most I hate hunting where there are others. Yesterday while bow hunting I saw another hunter. Bummed me out, he did not see me so I adjusted my hunt pattern. Good luck

I was probably editing the post when you viewed it. You should be able to see them now.

Rodger, thank you for the post with the photos. I know your luck is going to change & that 35 Whelen is going to anchor a nice buck!!
Get er done !

Blessings,
Dan

That country beckons for the Whelen.
Good luck, hunt hard, and have fun. Oh yeah, if you don't eat you won't get food poisoning. :)

Just trying to be helpful.

Thank you so much for that pointer Vince :!:  The problem is eating in restaurants where the sea food isn't handled properly. When you order all you can eat steamed hard shell crabs they are precooked and then refrigerated so the restaurants can keep up with orders plus they loose fewer crabs to spoilage. If they only reheat them once that's not too bad but when they take the left overs that aren't eaten store them and reheat that's when the problems start. I should have known better than to order them this time of year since crabs are out of season here and they are shipped out of Virgina and other southern states that have a year round season. which with the extended shipping causes a lower storage life.

Yes that area is very well suited for the Whelen for sure. Not much room for a shot over 100yds most are a 75yd max. (y)
If it isn't fresh don't eat it :!:

Besides, eating is over rated.
At least that's what I've been told. :)

I've been told the same thing but also a double shot of good top shelf Bourbon is a requirement for longevity at least once a day.

Given your moniker I trust it's not before you climb in the cab. [emoji2]

Hope your able to get out and hunt again TD.. Seems like some good woods in that area. I am also constricted by having to use a shotgun in our hunting area here in Va as well. It is pretty much the worst omen the hunting Gods could put on me being a certified rifle lunatic.. I make do though..

Hopefully you can find something out there. It's been slow in our area as well.

My primary hunting area is gone, swallowed up by housing developments and very small parcels to hunt in between. Plus the land owners are selling the hunting rights to the highest bidders so State game lands are all that's available to me right now and I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon but politicians on the county level have sold the residence out with the land development.

Scotty as far as the shotgun goes my BPS shoots very well compared to some and I've killed deer out to 150yds with it DRT. so I don't feel handicapped using it in the shotgun areas. They also opened up hunting on Sunday this year and that really hurt the hunting all over. The deer are buried up and won't come out in the day. I hunted one section where I saw plenty of Buck sign but it was a jungle of laurel and brush that it would have taken a Marine Platoon to drive them out. I hunted this area for three days walking a mile back into it to the top of the ridge every day and was there before day light and only heard one Buck grunting and never saw him because of the bush.
I really surprised myself by hunting this area because the terrain is very rugged and steep. I really gave the ankle and myself a hard work out couple of times I was second guessing myself why I was there and was wondering if I could get a deer out of there after I shot it. I have never really buddied up with anyone for a hunting partner since my son passed and my oldest daughter divorced her husband whom I basically adopted and taught to hunt but went his own way after wards to prevent conflict.
Next year I plan on getting back in better shape and getting out there earlier and scout like I use to. There still is a week left to hunt but have lost a little interest after last week. It was good to get out and push myself and test the ankle. Oh and I did show the wife where I was hunting on a grid map and where the closest roads were in the area I was in so she could find me if I had an accident. My youngest Grandson has taken his hunter safety course and I really need to get him out and teach him but his schedule conflicts with the seasons. ( Lacross and soccer )
