Ruger American in .223REM

I've threatened to do it for some time and the local hook and bullet place got one in. So I picked up a Ruger American in .223REM, one of the package guns with a 3-9x40 Redfield scope already installed.

I've helped a couple of new shooters set these up- a .243 and an '06 and I was pretty impressed. The .223 version was more of the same. I took it out of the box swabbed out the bore, tightened all the screws and boresighted it. A couple of groups and the rifle was zeroed. Then I shot 5, 3 shot groups that averaged under an inch with some plain Jane Hornady ammo.

I was pretty impressed for a rifle that cost a tad over $500, with a scope installed. The trigger is pretty good once I adjusted the pull lighter. The scope seems pretty nice for a budget unit and the overall fit and finish of the rifle is pretty decent given its price point. It's not a "fine" rifle, but a well executed inexpensive rifle. It seems a little better put together than my son's Savage in the same price class. The whole purpose of the rifle is predator hunting in the winter- so a date with a can of matte white Krylon is in the future. Seems a little bit the pity now.

The only glaring flaw is the magazine that came with the rifle is for a short action standard rather than the .223. I'm fairly confident a call to Ruger on Mon will sort that out.

Sounds as if you did alright. I heard and seen nothing but good with the Ruger American.

I'm pretty happy with the Predator as well.

Grab some 77 grain Sierra Tipped Matchkings. H4895 worked well for me but I'm sure many other powders will work. They shoot very well for what they are.

Ruger CS came through... a 2 min phone call and a new magazine is on its way.

I bought one in 308 hanging out in the pre-loved rifle rack at the local mom and pop gunshop.
It's a sure enough shooter.
