I've threatened to do it for some time and the local hook and bullet place got one in. So I picked up a Ruger American in .223REM, one of the package guns with a 3-9x40 Redfield scope already installed.
I've helped a couple of new shooters set these up- a .243 and an '06 and I was pretty impressed. The .223 version was more of the same. I took it out of the box swabbed out the bore, tightened all the screws and boresighted it. A couple of groups and the rifle was zeroed. Then I shot 5, 3 shot groups that averaged under an inch with some plain Jane Hornady ammo.
I was pretty impressed for a rifle that cost a tad over $500, with a scope installed. The trigger is pretty good once I adjusted the pull lighter. The scope seems pretty nice for a budget unit and the overall fit and finish of the rifle is pretty decent given its price point. It's not a "fine" rifle, but a well executed inexpensive rifle. It seems a little better put together than my son's Savage in the same price class. The whole purpose of the rifle is predator hunting in the winter- so a date with a can of matte white Krylon is in the future. Seems a little bit the pity now.
The only glaring flaw is the magazine that came with the rifle is for a short action standard rather than the .223. I'm fairly confident a call to Ruger on Mon will sort that out.
