I picked up a Pre Garcia L61R 338 a couple of days ago.
Serial #14xx, 26 inch barrel, rear ladder sight marked 100 to 500
Recoil pad is in very good shape with a slight crushing on the heal, wood is very good with only slight dings, blueing is very good only onr rub mark on top of barrel from a gun rack.
What i have found out is the 26 inch barrel with the ladder sight is rare.
Will be scoping with leupold in leupold rings unless i can find the original sako rings for it.

That is a superb find. Congratulations on finding such a fine rifle. Your load testing will be most interesting.

Those are a dandy rifle . I looking forward to your range report hopefully with photos:)

Blessings,
Dan

I could not find one of those L61 Sako's in 1968, when I bought my .338 WM, so I bought a Browning High Power instead. Nice find and great rifle which appears to be in good shape.

That is a nice 338. I don't know much about Sako's but that looks like a pretty nice rifle. Plus, I am not sure Sako made a bad rifle.

Congratulations on a nice find.
The 338 Win Mag give you a lot of flexability with its huge bullet selection.
What bullet(s) are you going to run through her?

I have been shooting the 200 grain bt out of my other 338 and have had good luck with it.
I will try it and the 200 grain AccuBond, and a 225 to see what shoots best.
I will be leaving on a muzzle loader antalope hunt on the 30th and will be back by the 10th of sept. Hope to start load development soon after.

Love the Sako rifles, had one in a 416rm once. Great looking gun you got there should be a shooter for sure. I'll look and see if I still have my sako bases and rings and if I do I'll get back with you.

I have some milled, solid steel bar stock machined taper bases and rings for the Sako 61 which were made in Australia. They are high rings however, and measure 1/2 inch height from the top mount surface to the bottom of the scope bore in the rings. I bought these on Ebay a few years ago but I do not need high rings for my Sako Model 85.
