Sask Boy's Elk Hunt

Dan, thanks for the description of your hunt. Congratulations on the elk, 507 yards is one heck of a long shot. Wow!

Awesome hunt Dan! Way to bring the Whelen into the fight! That looks like some excellent bullet performance on both accounts!

What a way to gather up a bunch of meat! Great hunt and excellent shooting buddy!

Sounds like a great hunt, congratulations on several freezer's full of elk. Thanks for sharing.

Sask,
You sure stretched out the Whelen but she still had the power at 500 yds to get er done !

Don

That is still a lot of mass slamming into that cow. The Whelen will definitely get 'er done, Don.

Mike I agree there is a lot of mass. I really believe with these new bullets & the powders we under estimate what the bigger calibres can do at longer ranges! I never once thought it was too far . I ranged it caught my breathe & the pulled the trigger. The only thing I was disappointed with was my shooting as I was about 6" back of where I should have placed that AB:(.

Blessings,
Dan

That happens from time to time even to the best of us, it is encouraging to see how well that bullet expanded way out there. You may wish to put the info on the recovered bullets in the bullet testing section ;) :)

Man, I am just happy as can be for ya Dan. I would bet you were still packing nearly 2000Ftlbs at 500 yards with that load and man, that is still alot of energy and as Mike said, alot of mass on target! Great shooting buddy. So very cool to see the Whelen reach out there.

Dr Mike,
I totally agree. I was amazed by his experience. I'm so glad I own a Whelen, just really like the 225 AB I use as well. It's quite the bullet!!

Don

STW, just wondering how is the Whitetail population in your hunting area?
I have checked with a number of friends who hunt different areas to me and everyone is finding the population is down dramatically:(

Blessings,
Dan

Hi Sask Boy, my estimation is that we have around 25% of what we had a year ago and the deer numbers then were still recovering from the winter before. The good thing is we only have a couple of inches of snow right now so this should make it easier on the animals coming out of the rut. 6 months of hard winter is more than these deer can handle and add to that the wolves and coyotes never take a day off.

Congratulations all around! Especially for having the discipline to do the 300 count, something I plan to emulate. Always learning something on here!
EE2

Sounds like a good hunt Dan, glad that you were able to shoot and harvest the calf as well. Lot's of good meat for winter.

Thanks Guys, just let you know that I have done a little unofficial poll on WT population here in Saskatchewan and it looks like a conservative estimate is we have lost 50% of the population in the last 2 years:(.
I have ask a number of people that hunt basically the entire southern 1/2 of the province.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,
Congratulations buddy! That was an awesome story and I'm glad you had that Artic Cat there to skid 'em out.

Joe

Yup it was the first time we used the cat. Had & still have a JD that has been a work horse for us for years:)!!

Blessings,
Dan
