I just traded into a barely used 93r17 camo: http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/93R17CAMOBRUSH

It doesn't have a heavy barrel, which is fine with me, is there anything I need to do/check/etc before I get to shooting? Is there a specific poundage the action screws need to be torqued to? I mounted a 3-9x40 Nikon I had laying in the safe for now but would like a higher magnification later on.

I bought 3 boxes of the CCI 17gr ammo to start with also, the guy I got it from said you MUST clean every 50 rounds?

Thanks

I have the same model, heavy barrel, black synthetic stock and its a tack driver with Hornady 17 gr. Haven't shot more than 50 without cleaning, so couldn't comment on that.
I use a bore snake w frog lube to clean and have not really had to adjust or mess with any of the screws yet.
I use it for fun and barnlot varmints. (It's zapped everything I've hit with it, no problem)
You'll have fun. They're accurate little rifles.

I have a heavy barreled one, as does Dad.

Between us we bought all 10 varieties of 17HMR ammo that we could find. I then shot each one for groups, and determined which rifle liked which ammo. They each like a different one, and we bought 10 boxes of the right ammo for each. I don't think that you can say one ammo will work. Mine hated the 17gr Hornady but LOVES the 20gr load.

Rimfire Central as well as Savage Shooters has plenty of technical info. You only want 10-12-15 in/lb of torque on the screws, no more than that. Swapping the bottom metal for a sturdier one from DIProducts will also help.

Oh, both rifles still shoot great - and I still haven't cleaned them yet.

I had the cheapest of the 93 models, in 17HMR, and mine shot TINY groups, but only with 20gr Hornady XTP ammo. 17gr varieties of any brand would shoot about 1" at 100 yards. 20gr XTP ammo shot about 1/2" at 100 yards.

Mine very much preferred to be dirty as heck. Cleaning it mean I had to shoot some to get the groups back, believe it or not.

My Savage 93 shot .452" at 100 yards.

This was on the one day we get every five years that the wind did not exist in Cheyenne.

Took it out for a spin today and it is accurate, very accurate. I did not shoot for groups at 100 because the wind was up a little but I did go water bottle hunting and it was easy to hit them.

I have 4 boxes of CCI 17gr ammo, 3 from 1 lot and 1 from another. I used the 1 lot starting out today and zeroed everything in, plinked and shot up 45 rounds. I started on the bottles at 100 and went 5 for 5. I used one of the other lots and went 0 for 5. I went and rechecked my zero and it was off .5" right and .75" high at 25yds with the new lot #, which I thought was odd. It still shot fantastic at 50yds, looks like I need to go pick up some more of the same lot #.

They are a blast to shoot. That is for sure.

I love my 17 Hornet now.
