Savage 99 Results

That is a beloved caliber with Maine Guides in 1950/60 era. Most settled on 150gr for Whitetails. The reason the trigger seams sooooo good is that on the early models the trigger is COMPLETELY different animal than the post 100xxxxxx guns. Very easy to adjust them down with a stone for WOP and remove all creep by simply shortening the the top of sear. Yours has obviously been in to a competent gunsmith at some point........ sound like you got a Dandy
Good Luck with it

This has got mind spinning on my Sav 99 - 300 Sav. I have a VXII 3x9x40 sitting on top. I’ve got plenty of factory CoreLokt 150 boxes but would like to load up something in the 125gn.

I think it’s pretty amazing that we see the Sav 99 still popping up in the forum every once in a while still. A CLASSIC !
Try the 125gr AB

Excellent reloading work (as usual) Fotis. Those 99's just handle so well. Be hard not to enjoy hunting with one. Cant get the nice groups out of my friends 99, but still so much fun to shoot! Enjoy!CL

My great uncle worked up a load for 300 Savage many moons ago that seemed to work well in most 99s...150gr Sierra SP over IMR3031, tack puncher at 100yrd (watched my father do just that) and deer that look like they were hit by a car when dressed.

His 99 now resides with me...I may carry it next season...

That one is a dandy Troy!

The only Savage 99 I have is in .358 Win. and just too pretty to hunt. I did run a few factory rounds and handloads through it and groups averaged right about an inch as I recall. King of a funny deal. I did an elk hunt near the Olympic National Forest in Washington state and while sitting on a stand contemplating my sins and other interesting thoughts came to the co clusion thata something in the .358 Win. would just about be perfect in the area I was hunting. Within two months afyer the funt I had my first one, a Ruger M77 tang safety. A week later the BLR, then another few month late a second Ruger 77 Tanger and finally the Savage 99. All I will add is with the limited shooting I did with all four, the Savage and BLR outshot the two Ruger by a noticeable amount. About that time I got my first .35 Whelen and the 358s have sat in the safe marking time ever since.

I have a Savage 99, was 308 but had it rebarreled to 358 Winchester, plus internals replaced. It turned out sweet. I am in Alaska and thinking Nosler .225 partitions and maybe Woodliegh PP might be the optimal choice for berry picking, moose and bear. It shoots both the Hornedy Factory 200 grain and Buffalo Bore 225 fine and the Buffalo bore would work but for the price and difficulty of getting that ammo to Alaska I’d like to roll my own. Has anyone worked up loads for the .358 Winchester in a 99 with either bullet. I see loads for the BLR but I believe that might be a tad stronger action than the 99. I am sure the bolt gun loads would be to much. Thanks

I believe the .358 is loaded to the same pressure level as the .243 and .308 so bolt rifle loads shouldn't be all that big a problem. The 99 is a pretty stout rifle as is. About the only problem I see is case stretching due to the rear locking. Frankly, I don't remember exactly what my loads were as it's been at least ten years since I played with a .358. I've just about always loaded my ammo on the hot side and don't remember much about what I did with the .308 except having to trim more often.

Thanks , I have very little doubt the 99 can take the pressure granted your correct with the case stretching, but that case is all ready ejected,
