Do you find the LOP to be long enough? Do you ever whack your thumb into your nose shooting heavy loads? I know you run a rail, so scope bite is not a problem.
Not Scotty - but I don't recall my thumb ever busting my nose with either of my 1895's - the Guide Gun or the standard version. Ran some pretty stout loads in those rifles too, like 425 gr cast bullets at 1950 fps.
I am not Scotty either, but I do get whacked in the nose by the Butler Creek scope cover lever on my Model 1895 if I do not remove the cover from the scope. This is with the Conquest 2.5-8x32 scope which has sufficient eye relief. Part of this issue is that I do not hold the rifle on the bench, except with my right hand.
The reason I asked Scotty in particular is that we are both big, tall guys. If he doesn't have a problem with it, I should be fine.
My dad has an M1 Carbine that I have a hard time shooting because of a short LOP I get whacked in the nose pretty frequently. A stout .45-70 load would be far worse to have smacking you around.
The only issue I have had with my 1895 Guide gun is the small lever. Off the bench, I just wrap my hand around it. Last year hunting, I had to make an effort to put my fingers of my gloved hand through the lever.
I have ordered a DRC lever that will fix this problem. Other than that, no issues.
Kurt, I can't say I have ever been whacked with the 45-70 shooting any of my heavier loads. I do get whacked a little shooting my M94 30-30, but it is really a light tap, nothing really distracting. I think the stock design is pretty sound on the Marlin to alleviate it. Since I have moved the scope forward, the rifle is a pussycat to shoot in any position. Scotty
