I believe it was Corey who first asked about off season practice and I had been thinking about doing this for a while and figured it would be great practice, low cost, fun, and of course would require heckling on the part of everyone involved. Here's how it goes, and right after I describe how it will work don't reply or anything until you see my next post on this same subject so give me just a couple minutes. Here are the rules and they are on the honor system!
Every 2 weeks a new shot will be posted. This weeks is from the bench at 300 yards. I used a Harris bi-pod on the front and a sandbag at the rear. Now if you don't have a bi-pod, sandbags front and rear are fine for this 1st shot in the series. This will continue until hunting season comes in late September.
1. One cold bore shot (you can take as many rifles as you want, but one shot for score from each)
2. No getting your rifle all sighted in & shooting it a bunch before you take your shot on the target. This is for fun and for realistic practice. I last shot my 30-06 a couple weeks ago & it was last fall for my son's Ruger MKII 6mm & my Ruger #1B 6mm.
3. Any rifle is allowed as any practice is good practice, and any kind of sight or scope is allowed. This is for fun and we don't get to warm up before we take that shot at the nice bull elk in our crosshairs.
4. You can do this as many times as you want for each shot. This is the 1st shot, but if you want to do it again next week or tomorrow with the same rifle or with others, that is what this is all about. Just post your results in the correct shot number such as this one is 300 yards from the bench.
5. You can sing your buddies praises when they make a good one, but it's mandatory to heckle them if they do not! This is for practice and for fun and to motivate us to stay sharp on our shooting.
6. This isn't going to cost anyone here a ton of money and my experience with rifles and with bows shows that 10 good well thought out shots is many times more beneficial than 40 average shots.
7. In two weeks I'll put something else up, maybe a 200 yard shot laying down using my Blacks Creek pack as the rest! Most of this will be in 100 yard ranges from 100-300 as not all of us have longer ranges. I'll try to include some 25 & 50 yard stuff as well. If I cannot make it for the next shot, 2nd shot, I'll let you know and someone else can think of one. As this goes along as I stated, we can come back and do any or all of these again. Just remember, first shot out of a cold bore!

Yes, it is down there 300 yards away!

Since my son's MKII 6mm already had the Harris bi-pod on it, I shot his rifle first. I cranked it up to 14x and held the 300 yard stadia line in the B&C reticle just about 1.5 inches below the center of the target as it shoots so flat. Got lucky on that one it appears! Next was my Ruger #1B 6X Leupold. Not bad and I guess I can live with that. I had to figure hold-over as I'm sighted in for about 250 yards so it's a couple inches low at 300.

Cloudy overcast day with poor light and a slight drizzle of rain. 4x Leupold on my 30-06 Ruger #1B. Could have used a bit brighter target, but you know what, that's what I had and we can't control the lighting conditions in the field. I also did two shots with my 30-06 because I didn't bring a fourth rifle and I just HAD to shoot that other square! Not really a cold bore shot I guess, but it's close. My first shot was the one on the left. The right was my second. I did not have binoculars, spotting scope, and no way could I see bullet holes at 300 yards with the limited lighting and the smaller powered scopes. Heck I could not see it with the Leupy at 14x!

I think this will be fun. Okay now give me your best shot!

David -
what the heck do us pooe guys do that only have 200 yard ranges to shoot at?

257 Ackley just shoot your rifles from the bench with sand or bi-pods and we'll let it go! This is nothing serious so everyone that only has a range out to 200 yards just use that distance for the 300 and post them on this 1st SHOT category. Just mark your target as such and any further shots 257 I'll have at 200 yards or less. There is a lot we can do from 0-200 and have some fun. Like I said, it's all for fun and for some good practice, and of course a little heckling from the cheap seats. I won't go past 200 in any more of the shots!David

NEXT GUY WHO SHOOTS IN THE SHOT ONE & DONE- 1ST SHOT, DO IT FROM 200 YARDS. I'll get out and do my own at 200 because hey that's what this is all about! After I did shoot the single rounds, I had to have a little fun with the 10" circle steel plate at 300 yards. I should have done it sitting or maybe with just the bi-pod from the bench without a rear bag, or prone off the concrete. I popped a couple with each rifle at it and never missed. Guess I'm ready for that sheep tag to be drawn the third week in June!

David.

I like the idea too. Just have to figure out where to shoot at 300 yards now. One question though. Should there be a target size say 10" like in game or are we just trying to get as close to what we area aiming at?

Corey

Great plan David. Can't wait to give it a try. Might have to break out the 270WSM and see what it's got! Scotty

Corey

Corey I think the target can be any size. I was using 2 inch squares with an inch square center. Certainly I was wanting to put that bullet right in the center of that inch square. Sure an animal has a much larger kill zone, but this is to help us practice hitting exactly where we are trying to in a very small area. Just imagine that being a gopher at 300 yards, that's kind of the idea. Not sure who said this the first time I heard it, but the idea is to "aim small, miss small".
You saw my two shots with my 30-06 and they were pretty close to the obvious aiming point, but they weren't there, so for that I should be heckled and teased. That's part of the rules! Yes it would have killed anything from a coyote on up, but it sure wasn't in the center of the target aiming point! Give it to me guys!

Corey I'm thinking that a lot of folks don't have 300 yards either so as you read, we'll just do it 200 and in. Now if someone wants to do 300 like I did on that shot, that's fine. Just mark your target appropriately. I already have the next one planned, and that's going to be off a daypack, jacket, hat, or whatever else you might use in the field for a rest. That would include shooting sticks as quite a few folks use those. The next shot will be 200 yards and it can be from either prone or sitting. Making it more challenging, no bi-pods on the next one though. There's all kinds of shots we can come up with and I hope this is as fun as it sounds like it might be.
David

Like I said, this doesn't have to break the bank. Yes we have to drive to wherever we are shooting, but you don't have to shoot a lot if you don't want to. Take 4 rifles and shoot one shot with each one, and then maybe one or two shots at the steel plate at 200 or 300 yards or whatever distance it might be. I look at this as "quality practice". Do that from the same position as what that weeks shot challenge is. Take your 22 with you and when you are done, have some fun with that for a while. It's much cheaper yet good practice also.

David,

Count me in but it is going to be a couple weeks. Access to the 200 and 300 yd ranges is tough on me right now.
I am off the crutches but still in the boot, I see my surgeon on Monday....

I will use my 280 AI, 6.5 mm Rem Mag, and 338 RUM.

Jim -
That's what you bring your daughter's BF along for....get him in the habit of being your "gopher".

I think for a crippled guy we'll cut you a little slack. I'll just do the next one at 100 yards, shooting over a pack or some sort of garment or device you might have with you in the field to include shooting sticks. I guess crutches could possibly fall into that category! Bi-pods a no-no for this next one though. We want to have some challenges. I have one of those multi length hiking poles that would be kind of neat to do one or two off of. It makes it simple on the up-down, but you have to hold it right or you get side to side movement with it. Jim can you do the 100 okay? That's a nice shot at a game animal anyway and is a common distance an awful lot of the time, and doing it over a pack or something just makes it more real. Can we count on you now??

David,

I can do 100 yds tomorrow as I am working up a load for the 6.5mm Rem Mag and also going to ff some 280 AI cases.

The 200 and 300 yd targets are 2 weeks out but I will be there. Count me in.

Sounds fun, best practice is real practice, I'm in . If the weathers good I'll brake out the cache and head to the range like there is a war about to brake out. Lol

Here are my cold bore targets from this morning. Shot at 100 yds.
The 280 AI needs a confirmed zero at 200 yds since I just mounted a VX-3 3.5-10x40mm CDS scope on it.
The 6.5mm Reg Mag is still in load development but I had a 100 yd zero from last week. Both bores were clean and oiled.

I hope to shoot 200 yds next week.

Looks good Jim! Man, I need to get a range day in order to get tuned up! Scotty

Jim it was hard to tell which target was from which rifle as they are .02 apart in size and I couldn't quite make out the difference in the picture. My eyes must be tired! Assuming since you said you had a 100 yard zero with the 6.5 and a 200 with the 280AI that the left target is the 280. Pretty sharp eh!

Good job. See it's kind of fun isn't it! Just have to remember we are trying to drill that bullseye so if we shoot 100 yards and we have a 200 yard zero, we have to hold a touch low! Both did very well for you though.

Hope the legs healing quickly for you!
David.

David,

The 280 AI is on the left, the 6.5mm RM is on the right.
Next weekend, I will use the same targets and shoot 300 yds.
