Does anyone have experience with a 338-06 Ackley using the Sierra 215 gr Gameking on game? If not, what are you using? Also, what powder are you using? I'm having a 338-06 Ackley built and am looking for a bullet that will work well on bear and bear. There is so little load data or articles available on this cartridge.

Never shot that 215 on anything. I imagine it would work fine though. Give us an idea of powders you wanna use or if not, I can send you some recommendations.

I will hopefully have my 338-06AI home by october ready for Nov bear season:

I just ordered some 200 grain accubonds from shooters pro shop picked them up for $20 for 50 rounds, thinking they should work quite well on black bears

seems most advise something like RL-15 or IMR 4320 the second one can be found...RL-15 havn't been able to find yet

A buddy of mine used to shoot them out of his 338 Edge for a while. Whacked a buck at 800 with them. He was happy with them. I would imagine that they would be a great bullet for the 338-06 AI.

I think the 215 has a reputation for being pretty tough.
If I remember right its another case of a smaller bullet having the thick base jacket of its bigger brother.
I might look at something else for 338-06 vel unless shooting close up.
Then again it might be what you are looking for w/bear in mind.

Kraky, I went to Sierra's web site and it does not appear that their 215 gr is the best choice for the 338-06 or the Ackley version. What bullets are you using in your 338-06s and 338-06 Ackley's? SJB358 asked what powders I was planning to use. I have RL15, IMR-4064, IMR-4320, IMR-4350, H4895, H414 and W760 in stock so will be trying to match one of these to the bullet selection.

I have a 340 bee. I tried the 215 sierra but didn't catch an accurate load but only tried a few. My 340 seems real partial to 250 class bullets loving the Partition and horn spire point.
I did section one of the 215 sierra and it did have an extra thick jacket.
If I was you I'd be watching shooters proshop for AccuBond deals....or maybe try hornady spire points. Horns are so unsexy yet always seem to work.

Give me about any other bullet and I can send it along as well. I would think the 200 AB or 210 PT would be excellent, as would the 200 grain BT.

I have one and I'm working up a load with the 225's AB and PT I'm running around 2750-2800 with a full charge of H414. For the 215's I'm thinking a guy needs something a hair faster Varget R15 would be my guess somewhere around 2800-2850. Or even IMR4895. When I fire formed I had a bunch of the Sierra's that shot pretty well but I just like the Partition or AccuBond a lot better.
