I bought a Sig P220 10mm Hunter a couple years ago with the intention of shooting a deer with it. I've been handgun hunting for a while now but I've never used a semiauto. While it has excellent iron sights, I really wanted to put a red dot on it & EGW makes a nice adapter that takes the place of the rear sight. I mounted a Vortex Venom with 3-MOA dot and loaded up some 180gr Hornady XTP's and 180gr Swift A-Frames. After doing some research here and other places, I chose Longshot powder for velocity and because I could find it locally.

Today was the first range session with the red dot & hunting loads. I'm a little hesitant to post my powder charge because it seems Hodgdon reduced it and I'm above max now but Nosler's manual shows charges pretty similar to Hodgdon's old data. I was hoping for 1200 fps in the guns 5" barrel and exceeded that.

At 25 yards every load was under two inches if I did my part. I was getting around 3-4" at 50 but would occasionally have a flier that really opened it up. I was hoping the XTP's and A-Frames would have a similar POI but the A-Frames hit about 5 inches right of the XTP's. Same weight bullet but the A-Frames are a good bit longer. A little more practice and I'll try and get a deer within 50 yards!

Loads consisted of Starline brass, 180gr XTP's and A-Frames, Longshot powder and CCI large pistol primers. Picture of the chrono is from the XTP load. I had another with a higher charge that averaged 1299 fps with XTP's and 1245 fps with the A-Frames. The slower XTP load seemed to shoot better.

while i'm not a single stack mag fan i now own 2 p220's (10mm sao legion & 45acp sa/da). my experience with single stacks has been less than stellar. hpefully these 2 will change for the better! my go-to in 10 is 165's, don't shoot much any heavier than that. i'd get a 320 in 10 IF they offered the frame in metal. enjoy the fun!

here's what i got in and trying to decide between the rmr hd and the sro for the 45 (dpp on the 10).

@salmonchaser I love Sigs and own several of the classic series in 9mm, 40, 10mm, 357 Sig & 45. One of my off duty carry guns is a P365 XL which has been fantastic. Too bad I can't carry one of them on duty.

@TexasLife I think you'll love them! I have a P220 DA/SA Legion in 45 and it's a very sweet shooter. P220's are known for being very accurate as well.

Hopefully I can post a pic in the near future of a successful hunt!

Not sure if this helps at all but looking at my Chrono data for a180gr 10mm that I have was just a target load from LAX, but it looks like it was running around 1200fps in a 4.25" commander 1911, and 1350fps in the 6" Dan Wesson 1911.
220gr underwood hardcast 1175fps-4.25" and 1271fps- 6"
I havent done any 10mm load development for hunting yet but it is on the list, but it looks like you could maybe push a little more if the accuracy is there. I have the EGW for a revolver, I need to look if there is one for my Dan Wesson.

The higher load I had did 1299 fps average with the 180gr from the 5" barrel but was not a published load. What powder were you using?

The load I showed the chronograph picture of is 9.0 grains of Longshot at 1268 fps average. That's just below Nosler book max but almost a grain higher than Hodgdon.

I'm sure some lighter weights would be wicked fast and a lot of fun on smaller game. Not sure how I feel about using them on deer unless it was a stout bullet.

@Slimfinn those are some hot factory loads. Which brand?

@TexasLife I was on the lookout for AA#9 but never ran across any.

Anyone have any experience on big game with their 10mm's out of a pistol?

big game is too slow! enforcer is closer, but still to slow. silhouette is fairly good

Beautiful pistols there!
I think i can see you've got Trijicon and Leupold reflex sights. Which one do you like the best?

the dpp is on the 10 and trying to decide on the sro or the rmr hd for the45. thanks for the remark as those are my 1st ever legions. i've owned a regular 226 (357sig) for about 10 years and love it! it eats and spits out everything i feed it.

Tell me about your reflex sights. Which one do you like the best?
I have a Sig Remeo and a Holosun. I like the Holosun way better.
