Those 340's are heaters though.. Hard to go wrong with either.

I'm curious can the model 70's in 338 be rechambered to 340 Wby, is there enough room in the magazine to fit it? I know it can be done with a Remington just not sure about a Winchester.

Sure, lots of the Pre and Post-64, .300 H&H were made into .340 Bees (same case). Some USRAC Sporters are .300 H&H or .300 Bee from factory. These can be rebarrelled.

Thanks, that's what I thought. So for those Winchester guys who want a 340 Wby as mentioned above would just have to buy a 338 WM and get a simple rechambering done :grin: That SS laminate Scotty posted a picture of would be great as a 340 Wby don't you think?

Sure, lots of the Pre and Post-64, .300 H&H were made into .340 Bees (same case). Some USRAC Sporters are .300 H&H or .300 Bee from factory. These can be rebarrelled.

Without a doubt. The only problem I would see is mag box length. My magazine isn't much longer than 3.45" I think on my M70 338. Not sure what a 340 needs, but I would think it needs at least 3.6"?

Scotty, I need to check into the newer rifles on magazine box length. My purely educated guess is that they would need a new floorplate, as well as the magazine box and follower. Plus the action need to have a radius cut which is over 3/8's long in the action ring. All Model 70 long actions come from the same forging, or have for 77 years.

I will go through my library and do a search for more binding information. Accepted wisdom (lore) seems to range COAL from 3.545 to 3.570 on the .375 H&H. The factory Model 70 would most likely be close to 3.545 inches COAL. I will get back to you on this because I do not have any magnum action Mod 70's hanging my gunsafe around anymore. The Pre-64's are .375 ready, only the spacer in the mag box needs to be removed, bolt face and feed rails modified plus, the action ring cut out be machined. A lot of trouble still.

Value-engineering wise, I am not sure that it is worth it? Only the difficulty in finding a magnum Pre 64 magnum action and cost might sway the decision. The individual has to decide for themselves, especially now that the Ruger is out in .375 RCM.

I am doing fine with my little pipsqueak WSM's and WM's. If I want a bigger case, I would get a regular old 375 Ruger case and neck it down to my preferred caliber I think. It has a 3.34" working length, so I wouldn't have to modify much of anything, plus, it'll fit on a magnum bolt face to boot. That is kinda my future project.

I am looking forward to the info you pass though Charlie. Always interested in the M70.

For factory chamberings of 375H&H and 300H&H, you'll need to modify your existing magazine box slightly. This will not cause you to loose magazine capacity, or sacrifice reliability in any way. From R. Rule, The Rifleman's Rifle (Page 102):
1. The second receiver for the H&H cartridge differed only by using a magazine which measured (overall) 3.669 inches.
2. The ejection port had two small cutouts, one at each end, which measured 3.669 inches long. My comment: No starting dimension is given as to how layout and to cut these cutouts dimensionally overlaid on the existing port. It would be easy enough to measure a magnum Model 70 action to find the starting points in the X and Y axes. Or even transfer them action to action with Dykem and a stylus to get you in the ballpark.
3. Stocks for these H&H magnum length actions were inletted an additional 1/4 inch longer in order to match the opening on the magazine receptacle in the bottom of the action.

This differs dramatically from some or most of the Forum Ninja's information in substance and content (on some other sites) which I searched as to the feasibility of conversion and even whether it is safe to do so. Since the Safari Model 70 has shot and killed at least 1000 trainloads of African game and never blown up a hunter, I am inclined to accept Rule's explanation as safe and effacacious.

I am going to let information this lie as is, because it is complete and speaks to the factory method of producing a magnum length action, Model 70. If anyone else has further data or any opinions, they are free and welcome to post and express same.

I am kicking myself in the butt a little as I passed on an M70 300WBY a few Winters ago. It had some nice wood on it. Had I thought better, I would have gotten it just to become a 340. Ah well. Might still be some out there?

Some years ago one of my good hunting buddies had a M700 BDL in 7MM Rem mag - he shot a couple of deer- a few moose and bears with it - all good ! THEN One day a black bear got away from him after being what he thought was shot GOOD ! So he wanted more muscle and we chatted about it and he decided to get it rebarrel the m700 and have it chambered in 340 W BEE .After that he shot all his game with 1 shot kills - he loves it - its still the only hunting rifle he has - he shoots grouse ? LOL to moose to bears with it with 250 Gr Nosler Partitions only ! Hunting would be a lot simpilier if i could just have one hunting rifle and a lot cheaper too ! :grin:
