Soooo......any ideas on 45-70 Govt

I really didn't think I'd reload for my new Marlin 45-70 until I started kinda looking around and saw that while I can get loaded ammo the finding of components is pretty skinny. That motivated me to find some (I'm kinda like that).

Sooo, anyone know where I can get jacketed bullets and brass? I have the powder and primers covered.

Starline brass, available at their website. They might be no backorder but if you call them they will take your order. The nosler bt have been on shootersproshop fairly frequently the last few months. Lots of options for cast, I usually order from Missouri bullet company. For powder you want 4198 or rl7.

The Nosler 300 gr BST is an excellent bullet.
I load them at 2100 fps and they hit like a freight
train. My best group with this bullet and H322 went .400"
at 100 yds.

I have several hundred Montana Bullet Works hard cast .459, 350 gr. and a similar amount of the traditional standby, the 405 Remington.

For 9 years I was a dedicated .45/70 loader, shooter & hunter. Sadly I only managed to take one mule deer with the .45/70, so I don't have a ton of field experience with it. Lots of range time & bullet testing time though!

Check it out. You'll find all sorts of stuff from 300 - 400+ grain bullets, both jacketed and cast!

The above bullets are 350 gr jacketed from Swift & Hornady. Pushed to over 2,000 fps via H4198 and slammed into the jugs at 20 yards. Excellent performance & accuracy from both. Obviously the Swift A-Frame hangs together better, and the Hornady expands more readily. I'd hunt with either.

Towards the end of my .45/70 journey, I came to really appreciate the hard-cast flat point 425 gr "Piledriver Junior" bullets from Beartooth, at 1900+ fps.

Great fun! Accurate and they'll penetrate pretty much anything...



I also got real stuck on the fixed 2.5x Leupold mounted low on the Marlin. Check Hodgdon for some serious .45/70 loads...

I am with Wayne here. Check out the Speer or Hornady 300's, or any of the great cast bullet makers.. The sky is the limit really. The Starline brass is REAL nice stuff.

The 405 gr Rem Bullet is the TOUGHEST jacketed bullet at a Resonable price out there - it will kill anything soft skinned ! - It is better then the Speer 400 gr for penetration . I load mine to 1800 + fps out of my guide gun ! :grin:

Guy, @ 1900 + that has to have a very stout recoil. It should "really" kill them DRT.

I always loaded my .45-70 for accuracy and to attain about 1800+ fps with 350 grain bullets, mostly Speer flat nose. My usual load was about 51.0 grains of IMR 3031 with Buffalo Bore cases and small rifle primers.

My 3031 I load is exactly the same as Charlie's. I have a few loaded up with RL-15 to try.
