I just ordered some Speer 170gr FN Deep Curls for the 30-30. I have an excellent load using the 170gr Sierra, but I can't find them in stock anywhere. They run about 2300 out of my Winchester with LVR powder, but since I can't get ahold of them, I am not a hard core Sierra fan and opted to try out the new Speer. I have always had great luck with their Hot Cor's I think these 30-30 bullets are worth a try. Any of you all tried them. I also ordered some of the famous 300gr Speer Uni Cor or whatever they are called today for the 45-70. I have a few great loads for the 300gr PT and BST, but I think I am a little too hard on the BST, so the Speer will make an excellent bullet that will take the speed and not make me shoot up all of my precious PT's!

Anyhow, just wondering if any of you all have messed with the Deep Curls at all. Pretty keen to see if they shoot. Look like nice bullets from the pictures and the price is very good. Scotty

Looks like an interesting bullet, but I probably have 250-300 rounds of .30-30 loaded already, and since I haven't even shot my current hand-me-down M94, I think I'm probably good for a while.

I would imagine that bullet manufacturers have gotten .30 WCF bullets figured out by now. :)

Your right Kurt. The 30-30 bullets are all very good as proven to me by Guy and probably at least a million dead deer. I only bought these as I couldn't find any Sierra's and Speers have always worked well for me. It is only a little 30-30 so I won't be tackling big stuff but I still like to experiment a little. I will get it into jugs soon though. Scotty

Scotty,

I think just about any bullet at 30-30 velocities should work great.

From what I've read and what I've seen from 165gr Spitzer Deep Curls thru a 30-06 into phone books, the Deep Curl is a Gold Dot. The recovered rounds we dug out of wet phone books look exactly like numerous Gold Dot pistol rounds I've pulled from dead bodie....errrr.....medium which I've fired my pistols into.

If so, I wouldn't hesitate to use them if they shot well in any of my guns. My only worry is that they do expand quickly and may not penetrate to exit in some situations but they are bonded and hold together well.

When we compared them to Grand Slams (I do like Speer and think they're under-appreciated) and Interlocks of the same weight, they didn't penetrate as far as the Grand Slams but opened up much wider and weighed ~ 10%more. They penetrated as far as the Interlocks but also weighed ~ 30% more. Our conclusion was that they must have opened up quicker than the GS and Interlocks and despite their weight retention, didn't penetrate any more due to their expansion. They were beautiful, just like Gold Dots, as far their uniformity and amount of expansion.

From what I understand, the DC jackets are electroplated (and as such, bonded) so the weight retention does not really surprise me.

I still have about 300 (3 boxes) of the .321 FP bullet for my .32 Special. This plus having about 6 boxes of factory 170 gr fodder laying around. I probably have enough bullets and ammo for life at the rate that I shoot this rifle.

Thanks for the heads up CC. I have no doubt they will be good bullets. Speer has made some great bullets in the past, and like you said, they are under-appreciated. Either way, I figure as soon as I see them as 2nds, I will grab a few hundred of the 170gr PT for the 30-30 and call it a day. I missed them last year when they were for sale, as I didn't have the 30-30 yet. I won't make the same mistake twice! Scotty

Cool Scott. I was going to start load development with my 30-30.

I do have about 200 FTX jobs though!

Fotis, 36.5gr of Hodgdon's LVR went 2300 with a Sierra 170gr FN. It was pretty accurate for me. Granted, I am shooting a Williams 5D on the rifle, but I was very impressed with the speed and accuracy of this combo. I am also using CCI BR2's and WW cases. The other really nice thing about LVR is once you set any decent powder measure for the correct charge, it flows through like water and hits dead on every time. Saves a little time for load ups!

This was 36gr's but 36.5 was the same sized group, but right at 2300. I don't see the point in messing around with it anymore. It is highly unlikely I would ever shoot past 100 yards with it anyhow.

I could have went with the FTX's, but I wanted to stay as traditional as I could with these, RN's and FN's. I am sure the FTX's are great too, I just love the look of the 170gr FP bullets in that little 30-30. Hope to take a deer with it this year. Scotty

That load will fill a freezer!

I'm trying to finagle my late Uncle's 94 in 32Spcl from my tree-hugging cousin. The plan is to put a Williams 5D on it and reminisce. He was a big influence on me as a young hunter who didn't want to hear anything more from my father.

Thanks CC. Those 32's and 30-30's are some cool rifles, just tailor made for hunting in the Catskills or Adirondacks. Might get a chance to hunt the Adirondacks again this year. Don't see a ton of deer, but man, it is nice just to wander around the mountains and take in the scenery. Scotty

I know there's no a lick of difference between a .30 WCF and a .32 Winchester Special, but I would sure like a twin to my M94 to play with in the .32. I'm not sure I'd hunt anything but paper, steel and milk jugs with it, but it would be fun!

Scotty, if you do find the Deep Curl seconds, let me know. Can't never have too many bullets!

A 30-30 or a 32 Spl chambered in a Model 94--it doesn't get much better looking for deer while traipsing through hardwoods.

I can't think of a cooler rifle either Mike. Looking forward to giving it a field test.

Kurt, I am not sure where I would get 2nds from, but they were about 24.00 from Graf's yesterday. Pretty hard to beat that price for a bonded bullet I think. Plus, I am sure alot of them will get shot up by my son. He is REALLY liking the 30-30 and might just want to carry it this year instead of his 243? Who knows, it is nice to look in Dad's safe and have options! Scotty

Yeah Scott I just bought a pound of LVR

Nice! I think you will like it. It seems to work as advertised. Not that I was really trying for more speed, but I kinda like to try new stuff once in awhile and it seems to be a winner in the 30-30 and 35 Rem. I am sure there are some other great uses too, just not any data just yet. It really seems like it should work well in the 356 and 358 as well.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with Fotis. Scotty

Cool, better to use the irons while he's still young, with eyes good enough to see through steel!
