Starting Work on the .284 Today

That rifle in a standard length action should be the Cat's PJ's! The 150 ABLR should sing from that rifle. Pictures when you get it.

The 8x68mm, hmm, that should be a handful! Doppelganger, 8mm Rem Mag with no belt?

Charlie,

The .284 excites me with the potential. It is a ballistic twin of the two .280s I have. Which means ... not much. All my research says the 8X68S is a ballistic twin to the 325WSM I shoot. When Scotty finally buys a 325WSM, we'll quickly have 220 grain AccuBonds and all sorts of new bullets to try; I want to be ready for the day.

I don't know about Scotty, if he keeps diverging to old and non standard calibers, he will be in a wilderness of his own soon, being a young guy and all! You and I are old and nobody cares if we shoot 100 year old caliber rifles because they think that I am 100 anyway! Personally, I am definitely not going to buy any more larger caliber rifles, I am diverging back to smaller calibers again.

Astute observation, Charlie. That Scotty is wandering into the dark forests where he may get lost and never seen again. Yeah, I enjoy shooting cartridges that were developed around the time I first began walking the earth. It is rather fun to resurrect a long-dead cartridge, watching it shine with new powders and bullets.

You aren't kidding Mike. Those old cartridges are pretty cool.. I am not sure if I am ready to dive into cartridges as old as you just yet, but I will stick with the early 1900's for now, till I can get the hang of it! HA!

The 8x68 should be a monster. That's another with a cool factor through the roof!

Scotty, makes you wonder why the old ones became obsolete. When you think about it Remington pulled a page out of Newtons book when they made the Rums.

Rodger,

Cartridges like the Newton were ahead of their time. They desperately needed modern bullets that would give good terminal performance at the velocities they produced, and they needed powders that would produce the required pressures without the need to overfill the case. Some of the loss of interest, especially on the European cartridges, is because they never quite made it across the pond. Fortunately, there are a few old duffers across the pond who remember hearing of them. A friend of mine works on some pretty strange old cartridges (think 10.3X60R Swiss, 351 Win SL, etc.). He keeps me pretty well connected to what is possible.

The 284 Win sounds like a cool round, should be fun. The 8x68 would work very well in a Remington action :)

It grieves me to even consider having a Remington to sully my accumulation of fine rifles. However, I have always been willing to have at least one such firearm just to avoid any charge of bias. I will keep it in a corner by itself, Gerry.

congrats mike, I have used the .284 in a few matches this year with the 180 vld, I will say that it is one of the most consistent and accurate rounds I have used to date. This is also my primary hunting rifle for that reason, yes all 16 pounds of it. Highly overlooked and highly efficient. I think it will work better than your hoping.

I am anticipating that to be the case, Jeff. It should be a fine toting rifle. Mine will be somewhat lighter than yours (I hope--old man, you know).

It is good to branch out a bit :) A custom Remington would keep your fantastic SS 280 Rem and great 350 RM company they could huddle together and find a way to take over the safe from all the Winchester's

Sssssssh! Don't let it get out that I have Remingtons in my safe. It could reduce the value of my fine rifles, even my Rugers.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll have to segregate before too long. Nefarious Remingtons aren't to be trusted!

I got rid of the Wemoil because it had Teflon in it but the Wemington, Corelokts are okay as long as you don't believe that they weplace Partitions!

Wemoil and Corelokts attract Wemingtons! Be afraid; be very afraid.

Let me see here, Ummm, my first Wifle was a Wemmy, first shot gun a Nitro Special. I gave the Nitro special to my Nephew and still have the Wemmy a 22 single shot.

Ah, yes, Wodger, er, Rodger, Wemingtons have often been associated with my shooting/hunting life. I just don't always talk about some of the mistakes of a misspent youth.
