Starting Work on the .284 Today

My early life was Wemmies and Wugers but then I bought a 1970 Mannwicher Winchester and life changed!

Ya I know what you mean Mikey. My Dad gave me a used Marlin 336 30-30 for Christmas one year I wanted a used M70 in 308 but my father wouldn't budge turns out he paid the same for the Marlin that his friend wanted for the M70. I never liked the Marlin and when I was old enough I found a used Wemington 725 30-06 which made me happier than hog in a mud bog. I latter sold the Marlin shot the throat out of the 725 and had it re-barreled in 257 Rob. and I still have it. It is the most accurate rifle I own and it's not for sale or trade!!! :!:

Yes, Charlie, a Winchester (Mannwicher stock) would transform anyone into a solid riflophile. Holding the Winchester, he would even be cured of a lisp.

Of a wisp, you say? Having a Winchester cured me of saying Wemington for sure!

It has pretty much cleaned out all of the Remington's, but one, for me..

No lisp anymore either....

It's good to be able to speak without a lisp. Keep those safes cleaned of Remingtons and you should have no further twouble.

For some reason, I want to say that you can get a COAL of 3.1" or so in a short CRF M70. I don't know much about PF M70s, but it seems ad if you could go longer... Or are you just arbitrarily choosing 3.125"?

Sweet project, Mike. I'd love to build a .284 on a SA CRF Featherweight.

Kurt,

Good to see your post. I had a long action Featherweight stock and wanted to do a build. I opted for the .284, but I was having trouble finding an action without buying another new Winchester. I'm not getting any younger, and the PF Winnie came in; I grabbed it and set things in motion.

Gotcha on the action choice, Doc, just curious at how you arrive at your COAL, when I think you could have gone a little longer, if need be.

The PF M70s are great actions; very Remington 700-like.

Allowing for maximum case capacity. I could have gone somewhat longer, but didn't really need to.

Looking forward to seeing the rifle and the load development. The .284 is one I've always been drawn to. It always seemed to be one of "perfect" short action cartridges.

Now, Rodger, cut that out. It's bad enough that you will make me want to wear a sack over my head when I shoot it.

I handled the rifle today. I should be able to pick it up next week. It looks pretty skookum. If it shoots as good as it looks, I'll be grinning from ear-to-ear with a smile that even the IRS couldn't wipe away.

Why :?: Are you ashamed of your creation :?:
Really I hope it shoots great. It wouldn't matter to me one way or the other if it were a push feed or a controlled feed. At least you'll be able to put one in the chamber by hand and not have it jam because the rim isn't behind the extractor and it won't snap over the rim.
I have push feeds a Wemington and a Weatherby Vanguard and neither have given me any grief. The CF Ruger 77 hasn't either. To be honest I never payed attention to either one until I got on this forum and was wondering what everyone was talking about. Yeah I've been hunting and reloading since I was 10 and didn't know the difference. Sometimes it's blissful to be uneducated in these things so we don't get caught up in all the should of could of would of.
