Steyr Scout...finally home

I acquired a Steyr Scout a few months ago from a close friend. I finally got it home and on the range...it's a shooter. I believe I helped zero the rifle some 15years and 5000miles ago.

The left target is 5 rounds of Remington Reduced Recoil ammunition. The right side is 5 rounds of standard 150gr Corelokts at 110yds at -21F

Yep...308WIN. It's one of the first ones, before the 7-08 and .223 came out.

Winter caribou and letting the wife and kid shoot it.

I'd shoot about anything up here with a .308 given the right shot though. I've got better choices for the really big stuff but if I get the right opportunity I'd not pass except perhaps griz.

The Steyr Scout is an interesting concept; they do seem to shoot well. It does look as if you got a good one there.

Unique and interesting rifle. Looks like the standard 150 gr ammo works well from it!

If you use it afield, I'd like to see a report or two re your thoughts on the rifle. BTW, concur on your assessment of the .308 Win, other than really big, dangerous game, I'd hunt anything with it.

Regards, Guy

The one thing I noticed immediately is that in really cold weather the scope is far enough forward that it doesn't collect ice from your breath on it. I was shooting a couple of other rifles and the oculars would ice up in a few moments from my breath- usually not a big deal when hunting but it could be.

That could be handy!

Doubt the good Colonel had that in mind when he was busy advocating Scout Scopes & Scout Rifles 20 years ago - but it's certainly a benefit. Cool.

I'd load up some 165 gr Partitions and hunt merrily with such a handy rifle.

It's a Leupold "Scout Scope", fixed 2.5x Intermediate Eye Relief and SWFA has a 1-4x IER- not as much eye relief as a true pistol scope but more than a rifle scope.

Burris also makes a competing model.

One of the local guys had a Steyr Scout .308 at out at our local range last summer. His Scout was shooting bug sized groups at 100 and 200 yards. It made me a believer. Not a pretty rifle, but "pretty is as pretty does"

I had one of these back in 98-2000. It shot amazing groups at 100. I once had a 10 shot group that was literally one ragged hole. I killed a whitetail at 275yds and smoked more groundhogs than I can remember out to ridiculous distances for such a rifle- if I could see it, I could hit it.

It was sold off to finance my AK move and was one of the few I've parted with that I regretted afterward. I was fortunate to pick this one up from a friend recently.

I bet this one will shoot better than the photo shows- that was shot over the hood of an idling jeep at -21F....not exactly conductive to best accuracy.

What type of scope is on there? Do you use a handgun type?

EER or extended eye relief.

Well the kid grabbed onto the Scout today... we took the stock spacers off and lo and behold it fits perfect.

He loves it...no eye relief issues, light, he even reaches over the top and works the bolt wrong handed like a champ without a scope on the action....popped the integral bipod out and he thought he'd died and went to heaven. For a budding 11yo hunter the Scout is as exotic as a Ferrari and just as cool.

Wants to go hunting this weekend.

ugh. I've probably lost it forever...lol.

Yup sound like you did lose it! But you gained a hunting Pard!

That's not altogether bad. Congratulations on picking up a hunting pardner.

Guess I'll have to turn that left hand Browning I was going to get him for Christmas into something else!

Hmmmm....what do I need?

I loved shooting these. A neighbor has the 376 Steyr and the .308 and both were a riot to shoot.

I have to say, I'd like to own one of the 376s. That rifle, as light as it is, is still a lot of fun to shoot, even if it dislocates your shoulder, detaches a retina, and spins your brain around inside your melon. :)
