Was at the Cabelas in Tulalip/Marysville Washington today. I don't see them on the web site, but there were TWO of the Cabelas 50th Anniversary .458 Win mag Model 70's there, marked waaaay down.

These are very nice rifles, well finished, and with good walnut stocks.

They had been priced at about $2200 each and are marked down to $1,300 - $1,400, I didn't grab the exact price because I AM NOT in the market for such a beast. I've fired the Model 70 in both .458 Win mag, and the more powerful .450 Ackley, and they're more rifle than I need for anything in my life. But... If you're thinking about a mighty fine stopping rifle... Why not? Good price.

Again - I don't see these on their web site for some reason, but the pair of rifles were on the shelf in their Gun Library at 0830 this morning.

FWIW, Guy

Yeah the ones in KC and Omaha are marked down to the same point as well..

I have a box of 458's on the shelf that i bought years ago ( before marriage and kids), but I have no intention of ever owning one... at least at the moment. :)

Dang. Something like that would be pretty cool.. I imagine it would raise some eyebrows showing up in deer camp..

Met a fellow long ago, when I was a young Marine. He was shooting his .458 Win mag at the rifle range. A Model 70, with real nice wood. He'd purchased the rifle for his "once in a lifetime" hunt and had taken it to Africa, where he used it on dangerous game and other critters as well. The plan was to sell it upon his return home...

He liked the rifle too much for that, so he started handloading it to .45/70 levels and at that time was using it as a whitetail & black bear rifle, with considerable success!

His was the first .458 I ever shot. The handloads weren't bad but those factory loaded 510 gr soft points... Wow! They got my attention.

Yeah - too much rifle for anything I do, though I suppose it would be quite useful on cape buff.

Regards, Guy

THe only use I have for the .458 Mag. is the brass which I convert to feed my .375 Taylor wildcat. Gives .375 H&H balistics in a 30-06 length action and does kick a bit in my 7.5 pound Ruger M77 with Ramline stock and 4X all steel El Paso Weaver scope with post reticle. Not much fun of the bench but not too bad in the offhnd position. Like most of my other heavy kickers, it too is in semi-retirement. :( The arthrtis in my right should protests somewhat when I shoot stuff like that.

I know I wouldn't let a big gun sit unused if there was one in the safe!
