I was gifted a T/C Encore Pro Hunter 28" 35 Whelen yesterday from a friend and I'll need some guidance from the Whelenizers here.

I figure I'll put Talley LW lows on it, some form of Leupold, RCBS dies and the 225gr AccuBond. I also have a box of 250gr Hornady RN laying on the shelf.

I have H4895, can get RL15 and can possibly get 8208. No Vargay around here as I know that's a popular powder.

2800fps with 200's
2650-2700fps with 225's
2500-2550fps with 250's

Am I too high on my speed estimates?

Congrats on the gift and welcome to the family. I'm still experimenting with mine trying to find that one load. IMR4064, Varget, RL15 powders are what I have used so far and getting ready to try some IMR8208XBR. There are lots of combinations and I would check the reloading section of this forum since there is a wealth of knowledge in there.

Your estimates are doable.

Whelenizers ..... I love it. Congatulations on a nice rifle and awesome caliber. You will find pleanty of help for it here. Although I am without a whelen in the safe at the current time I will get another at some point. Once a whelenizer always a whelenizer .Lee

I would have said this group was "Whelenistias," but they do proselytize. Thus, Whelenizer is appropriate and likely correct.

Whelenizer! Whelengeezer! It's all pretty much the same thing. Those who have sufficient maturity to winnow out the chaff have generally paid their dues to the fads long ago. Now, they are ardent (strident?) advocates for the queen of cartridges.

Well said .Lee

NICE! That 28" barrel doesn't hurt the speeds, that is for sure!

Welcome to the club.. Those speeds with the 28" barrel are pretty danged good looking, especially since you are around 55K..

You should really enjoy it. Mine has been very easy to load for..

Thanks for the QL info and the warm welcome into the Whelenizer club.

With a 358 Win and 3 - 35 Rem's I'm in the 35 club just not in with the big kids.

My MidwayUSA cart is very heavy with Whelen materials.

I just went all Mel Gibson from the Patriot on it.

"Before this winter is over, I'm going to shoot you."

Whelen's reply, "Why wait?"

"........soon......"

I gave it some crazy eyes and then stormed out of the room.

With a 28" tu e, you should get some impressive speeds.
The 250 gr bullets should get wl over 2600 fps. That's 338 Win Mag territory.

No doubt, it will provide some punch to whatever is smacked with any bullet bearing that mass.

Get a Bellm TC trigger spring kit for you Encore. I got one for mine and it now has a 2lb pull.

And another one bites the dust. (y) Merry Christmas and welcome to the world of the .35 Whelen. Since I got mine I've only used the 225 gr. TSX on big game, Have done some minor testing with the 225 gr. AccuBond and Partition but still have to tweak for accuracy. Also have to hit the LGS to see if they have more bullets. I'm out. I have plenty of the TSX but no Accubonds or Partitions left to work with. :(

Nice! Now that's thinking outside of the box, a short break open action mated to a long barrel. More velocity in the same size package without hot rodding the cartridge, you'll have a winning combination there.

Welcome to our Whelen family it is a great calibre. I only use 225gr. Accubonds over top of RL-15. For me it is a winning combination !! I am sub-MOA & still traveling at just over 2700fps.

Blessings,
Dan

Yes! People forget about that wonderful advantage of the single-shot rifles. They have such a short action, that overall rifle length can be seriously reduced while using standard length barrels, or a long barrel can be used, still keeping the overall rifle length reasonable.

I've had a T/C Prohunter for a long time now. Happy to answer questions thru PM, as I don't see them discussed on our forum much. For what it's worth, I have gone with either high strength weaver style scope bases or the Leupold dual dovetail. With the weaver style base, I have installed a set screw at the front which contacts the barrel. The short base length and the failure to fit the the barrel contour are issues which allow the scope to flex on firing. Really. With heavier loads anyway. I have done about all the Bellm protocol and do like the rifle.

I have a couple of the encores, one set up with an m4 style collapsable stock for my 11 year old son. The adjustable lop has come in handy as he grows.

The other is used mostly as a 209x50, but I also have a 24" 22-250, a 24" 30/06, 17" 308, and an 18" 45/70. With the 308 and 45/70 barrels that is one compact little package, especially on the collapsable stock.

I have found all barrels to to pretty accurate but the 22-250 is a real tack driver. When combined with 22-250, 30/06 it makes for a great traveling set up.

I have noticed that a small rubber oring placed on the forend screws between the forend and barrel help to keep poi more consistant when swapping barrels.

I have switched back and forth between the laminated Boyd's stock and the factory prohunter synthetic stock. Accuracy is about even between the two and it usually comes down to weight. I'd say about 90% of the time I run the synthetic stock as it is much lighter.

Your whelen barrel should serve you very well. With no COL restrictions you should be able to load heavy bullets out to the lands and squeeze the most out of the whelen case. Should make it into a real big game hammer!
