My dealer has a new Browning on the shelf for a long time and can not get rid of it. From $700 he dropped the price to 499 out the door. It is a 22" composite stock. Very light package!

How close to 25-06 ballistics can you get with reloads? Any experience with this one?

The only thing I've heard about the WSSMs is that they are notorious for feeding problems, agian that's just heresay, and not first hand experience. At 499, it may be worth the effort.

...............According to my reload info, nothing really to be gained ballistically going to the 25 WSSM vs the 25-06. Regardless of how good the deal is for the Browning 25 wssm and if you already have a 25-06, take that same $499 and apply it toward something else in a caliber you don`t have.

I not only have read of feeding issues, but accuracy problems as well. That`s not to say that this particular Browning may have problems. It may be ok.

I`m a WSM fan....From the .270 on up!!

I do not have a 25-06 now.

POP, I've heard of pressure issues bigtime with the various WSSM's, so be aware that there may be something to that. One of the sources I heard it from ended up with a new gun from Browning...

Now, as far as the loadings go, best I can tell, the WSSM is pretty equal to the 25-06 as far as most stuff goes. I looked at three sources and found the same basic ballistics for each.

Unless you're just looking for the 'coolness' factor, what you save on the gun you're going to spend on brass and dies...

I think it has been discontinued from the Browning and Winchester lineup, but i could be wrong.
There has been some issues with the brass being too hard, not sealing off the gas when the gun was fired.
A friend of mine has one that he's going to sell or trade.

..............Good! Then you can just get a 25-06. The 25 wssm just looks funny or looks out of porportion.

If I were an American Indian, I`d say; "Ug! Case too wide, caliber too small...........

A friend that I hunt with had one in a Browning Micro Medallion. He loved it, but sold it to his BIL cause he needed a deer rifle. I know he loaded for it, and said it was real accurate, but I never shot it or saw it shot. He shot the 120 grain Partition. I was thinking of getting one myself.

Let me know if you don't buy it as I would be interested. Is it the Stainless Stalker or the composite stalker?

Pop,
My studies show a lot of problems with the WSSMs.
I have a 223 WSSM Black Shadow. I couldn't get it to keep 3 shots on a paper plate at 100 yds. I tried everything and then started on the forums. You might have seen my questions. It was pretty dismal. Either they shot real accurate or they were garbage. I finally sent mine back to have it checked out by Win. about 3 months ago. They sent me a new one!! It shoots pretty accurate but I haven't wrung it out yet. I like the light weight of it . It's like a 22 LR. You (Will) need a rifle basix trigger for it. They run about $90. I like mine and wouldn't sell it. I bought a Savage 22-250 in the interem and I don't even use it. I put about 50 rds. thrue it. So they can be a pain and some expense but you won't find that level of power and accuracy anywhere else. Or you could have a big headache. The rounds look weird but I have had no feed problems at all.

Good Hunting
Elkhunt

I passed so whoever wants it pm me. It is a great looking gun.

I had a .243 WSSM for a short time, but couldn't reload it hot enough to meet the advertised velocity, without the cases sticking and showing quite a few pressure signs. The best loads I could get were at or below regular .243 Winchester velocities...this, along with a worry about future brass made me sell the rifle and upgrade to a .257 Weatherby Mag.

I had a Winchester Shadow in 243wssm It shot great but I always had feeding problems. You have to close the bolt quickly and forcefully to chamber a round. If the first try doesn't work you can not bring the bolt rearward for another try without picking up another round and jamming it under the previous round.
A real pain in the butt to clear.

Well being the self appointed champion of the 260-3000 Savage you know I cant pass on this one. Fisrt off- it should have been a 250 Savage but that aint gonna happen. Second, there is no real balistic advantage over the 25-06. You can match the 25-06 in a short action but that about it. Gander near me has a similar situation with a winchester compact. Nice
Rifle , cant sell it. Reality is you can buy 25-06 off the shelf at most hardware stores. You Wont do that with 25 WSSM. As to all the other alledged troubles noted here I hadnt heard about them b-4.
What winchester should have done was neck down the 270 WSM case to .25. There are a few Wildcats out there that have done that. They are right in the ball-park or better than a 257 WBY. That in a medium length action would have sold rifles!! IMHO CL

I had one in Winchester model 70 Super Shadow. It shot VERY well, around 3/4 MOA with factory ammo. It had to be cycled very fast to avoid a jam. THe rifle was just over 5lbs, absolutely great to carry, but I sold it to a friend that wanted a WSSM in the worst way. I think the caliber is cool, but agree winchester should have just necked down the 270WSM.
I beleive the winchesters were the ones that had the realy bad accuracy problems due to the chrome lined barrels. I have no idea how the Brownings did.

I just bought a 257 wby Vanguard sporter. It's a little heavy, but the ballistics are phenominal for a factory round. LOL, dollar for dollar it may not offer enough over a 25-06 unless you form your own brass from 7mm Rem Mag or something similar, which is time comsuming......
My wife likes the 257, so maybe I can get my 30-378 back now

If you're sold on a short action a 257 roberts ackley improved with a 40 degree shoulder has been around a long time and is close to a 25-06. Not as close a the WSSM, but not with the reputation for bad barrels, pressure & the odd case neck getting pin holes burnt thro it.

I got 3425 fps with 7828 and the 117 grain grain hornady bt......... great combo.
