The 25-06 Is it really enough for mule deer?

A dedicated elk rifle should be a minimum of 8mm.

Care to explain that statement? I have yet to meet an elk that felt my 300 H&H was not a large enough diameter projectile to properly die.....granted, my personal sample size is only 19 elk but I'll keep researching and let you know if I find an anomaly. I'm not against using a larger cartridge, but it certainly isn't necessary.

My di is cast. 338 RUM for elk and 25-06 for mule deer. OK, so I whimped out and am taking the 280 Rem also. But it's only in case of emergencies. It's been a real learning experience for this die-hard magnum hunter.
Thanks everyone

Take the .280, and you won't need the other two! Seriously, the 25-06 will serve you very well on mule deer. I've taken countless mulies with my .280; none ever required a second shot. It is more than adequate for elk with a good bullet and a steady aim.

I used the 280 last year for elk and mule deer but never got a shot. Could be a re-run of that but I have more time to hunt this year so I'm thinking I'll at least get a mule or whitetail. I'm crutching on the 338 RUM and experimenting on the others. The 280 by the way has 160 Nosler A/Bs at 2950 fps. and it's a tack driver. I have no doubt the 280 adequate but the canyon is ugly on the other side of the ridge and I want a quick anchor.

BLASPHAMY!!!!

BLASPHAMY!!!!

Yeah, I know. However, don't tell the animals I've shot with one of my .280s that they were taken with an inferior cartridge.

Hey, there could be some bragging rights here if I do this right. Oh yeah, and I'll take lots of pictures.

280 Rem and 25-06 two of the best deer cartridges out there! :p

.243
6mm
.257
.264
.270
.280
.30
.32

are ALL good deer cartridges.....

I hope that the .25-06 is enough for deer. Nobody has told my .257 Roberts that it can't kill a deer.

I was toting a 9.3X64 when I encountered deer today. I passed as I was somewhat fearful the bullets might bounce off their hide. I'll carry my .280 next time.

Those Canadian whitetail deer have a reputation for being tough! Plus, the .280 must kill magically! With a magical bullet.

Only the northern ones, Charlie; only the northern ones. Coming in, I drove within fifteen feet of a couple of whitetails. They were simply too docile to fill a tag with them.

I've taken lots of deer, mostly mulies, with my 25/06 and usually 115 ballistic tips and never had one take more than a few steps. Even when I've made less than spectacular shots they always go down.

Speaking of enough gun, I killed a whitetail in Northeastern Wyoming that I had almost peed on. When he jumped and my heart rate went to 130, I fast drew a Browning Highpower 9mm from a high ride, thumb break holster and shot the whitetail in the back of the head at 15 feet in one motion. I just instinct fired and drilled him with a 9mm! It was a cull hunt.
