A good buddy of mine put a bait up on Wed. but it was in a poor location. So we went up today and set up a new bait. I haven't been able to get any stale doughnuts and bread yet so I had to splurge for dog food, maple syrup, and chocolate syrup. I also got some anise for hanging scent in addition to some squid left over sturgeon bait and bacon grease from Sunday morning breakfasts. I took my single burner camp stove up and cooked the bacon grease until it was liquid and poured it over several logs. We also poured a bunch of the chocolate syrup on several logs and the rest on the dog food.

I think we are headed back up Wed. or Thursday. It's suppose to be in the 70's and 80's for the next few days so the squid and bacon grease should have it's stink on before then.

Well, that should bring Yogi in! Man, except for the dog food, it sounds good enough to eat! Good luck, and hope the bears aren't too discriminating in the taste department.

Good luck buddy! That sounds like it will fill the drainages with some good stink! Hope your able to get onto the bears. That should pull them from a long way!

The way the wind was blowing today every bear within a mile or more should be there within a day or two.

I haven't ever had a very hard time baiting but then again I'm not that picky. We will have to set up a little further from the bait then I like to but that is the best spot I could find in the somewhat limited time we had to set up the bait. I still didn't get home until 10:30 tonight. It's 163 yards to the bait barrel but it should keep our scent way down being that far.

this company sells a lot of very good bear baiting products. I have used their bait scent balls and they work very well. Bears will knock trees over trying to get to them. the Yo-yos are pretty handy too.

I haven't gotten my bait out yet because snow s still pretty deep but my buddy has had his out for a week not and gotten 4538 pics on his trail cam. sadly they have all been brown bears.

In the testimonials there are some good ideas too. Thanks for the link to the site. The honey burn can and using popcorn are good ideas. My little single burner stove I used to heat the bacon grease would work for that and I think bacon grease would do just about as good as honey. It helps I have 6 or 7 quart jars in the freezer too. I've been saving it for awhile since we've had too much snow the last few springs to get up to my other baiting spot.

I like the picture of the guys posing with the bear they shot and the other bear is in the background.

Best "bear smoke" I've ever seen.... was a bag of marshmallows, a box of strawberry Jell-O mix, and some Karo Syrup... all heated up in a big cast iron skillet. You could literally see the smoke wafting for well over a mile.

If I need to I'll try it. I doubt you could actually scare a bear off with scent especially a sweet scent. They'll eat anything so the more scent the better to bring them in.

Good luck with your baiting.
What I do is dig a 12-18" hole about 3' round and fill it with cheap dog food. I pour a pickle bucket of deep fryer grease over it and cover it with 6' logs. I also cut a sapling near the bait at 32" and strip 2" off the top creating a white marker.

The logs keep the smaller animals from stealing the bait. 6' logs perpendicular to you are a gage for the length of the bear and the 32" marker helps with the height in low light.

Another excellent bait is fermented grain. Easy to make in pickle buckets. Mix grain, sugar and water. Stir well and cover for 2 weeks. The bears love it!

They like it because your getting them drunk. I should do that with fruit too.

I don't know if that is kosher or not! Shooting alcoholic bears. I guess it is better than making them go cold turkey. Man, addict the poor critters and then shoot them.

Man I wish Oregon wasn't full of so many dang liberal bleeding hearts and would make it legal to bait bears again!

And allow dogs for bear and lions. I use to hang around a lot of hound guys and most of the ones from Oregon sold their dogs.

The upside is you can always come to Idaho to bait and help us thin the bear herd.

Well I got somewhat creative tonight even though I doubt we'll need it. I mixed strawberry jello with sugar, marshmallows, and Karo syrup (thanks Songdog) and poured it all over popcorn. Then I cooked some popcorn in bacon grease and poured a quart and a half of bacon grease over the top of it. The third was marshmallows, Karo syrup, sugar, and anise over popcorn. It's all in the freezer getting hard. If they get hard like a ball I'm going to hang them for scent. If not I'll put it in the barrel.

Man, that makes me hungry. At least those bears won't be drunk, or do you have a bar for them to stop at first?

I told my buddy about Jim's grain mash and I said it would be funny to see a bear drunk. He said we could get some cheap wine and add a ton of sugar to it and see if it works. But no liquor this time.

I've seen drunk grackles and drunk raccoons, but a drunk bear would just be too funny. Every time I think about that I start laughing. Good luck on your hunt. I need to get out very soon. I received a report from my hunting partner who travelled through the Pine Pass and saw five bears, including three grizzlies. That gets my blood moving. However, I'm working at the range all day tomorrow.

I'm working until noon tomorrow and then off to check the bait and sit on it if something has been hitting it. My buddy has 4 game cameras up to watch the first bait he put up and the bait we set up Sunday. So while we wait we can look over the trail camera pictures on the laptop sitting at our shooting benches in a camp chair. Ah roughing it at a bear bait.
