The Bark of the 35 Whelen

I'd highly recommend the Pachmayer Decelerator.

Works wonderfully on my .375 Number One.

Yep my friend has a Savage 10 in 06 and mild 165's kick like a dang mule my 338 with full bore 225's I can shoot all day long get a Pachy and don't look back it's become a requirement for any rifle in my safe.

I put a Simms pad on my Ruger No. 1 soon after purchase. Full loads on 286 gr bullets at 2350 fps are way past the recoil reduction efficiency of that thin, hard Ruger pad.

TD, you're gonna love the Whelen even more when you start running bullets into deer.

I have 250's up at about 2520-2530, and the recoil is there, but not prohibitive. When I shot them up to about 2600-2650, there was a noticeable uptick in felt recoil. I wasn't heartbroken when the rifle's best accuracy came 2gr under max. :)

I have three Remington M700s, a 1981 BDL and a Classic, both 30-06's that came with a plastic buttplate that beat the hell out of me. They now wear Decelerators. My Classic in .35 Whelen still has the factory pad and while is really doesn't bother me regarding kick it has gotten a bit harder over time so methinks another Decelerator pad will soon be on that rifle as well. Dunno when my custom .35 Whelen Mauser was made although there is an inscription on the floorplate that says "Big Red" 1935 yet had a two postion M70 style safety. :?: The pad on it is also getting quite hard but the rfle fits me so well that I haven't decided whether to put a Decelerator on the gun or not. Right now for me it's perfection personified so I'm inclined to just leave it alone. The only limbsaver I have is on a Winchester M70 .338 Win, mag,1968 issue and it's turning to goo. I have it wrapped in masking tape right now as I'm trying to decide whether so sell it off or replace the pad and put a muzzle brake on the gun. That rifle just flat out beats me to death as does another .338 Win. I have in the stainless Classic. I have no problem with the .300 Win. but the .338? Pure hell on the bench.

I've only shot a couple of .338's, and I agree, they can be tough to handle.

I think it's because they're often no heavier than a 7mm mag... But have a LOT more punch. Rifle makers tend to beef up the .375's and make them heavier, but the .338's seem to get the same stocks, actions, and barrel contours as the other usual magnums, and with less barrel weight because there's a bigger hole down the barrel!

Yeah, they can be a bit tough to handle. Agree.

On the other hand, I like the recoil of both my .375 rifles. Go figure?

Rodger ,glad you got a chance to let the Whelen fly. The recoil never really bothered me ,however shooting from a bench is not the most enjoyable. A good recoil pad like a limbsaver or decelarator would be a good investment for you.Lee

Anyone using the New Limbsaver Air cell pad? been doing some research and found them on the Sims Vibration web site. Always looking for the best reduction possible. Claim 70% reduction of felt recoil with the new style. They also make a Nitro model which is 1 1/2" thick. They also have a template you can print off to get the right fit if you use their prefit style.

I was out and about today supposed to be picking up some canning supplies and other things but found myself in one of my favorite gun shops.
Got to see and handle a Limbsaver recoil pad. Those things are really soft compared to other pads I have handled and a softer than the Pachmyer Decelerator I have on my 300 Bee.

I've got the limbsaver on a couple of rifles. Earlier ones.

Much prefer the Pachmayer Decelerator. Not quite as much give, and sometimes that's a good thing.

FWIW, Guy

I like both the Decelerator and the LimbSaver. I've used Decelerator pads for far longer and had no problems. Guy's point is well taken.

If I could find one of the new Limbsaver Air Techs to feel it would be easier to make my decision.
I agree that a firmer pad is more desirable. I put a slip of Limbsaver on a Remington stock in the shop and shouldered it to see what the length of pull would feel like and it did shift and didn't mount the way I like a rifle to mount up, But then I'm not use to recoil pads on rifles and all my shot gun pads are firm.

I've always liked the Limbsaver pad...but as Guy said, for a real hard kicker they might be a little too soft.

I take it that you prefer the Decelerator for the harder recoiling rifles :?:
On the grind to fit pads you have installed do you use a jig or the old school method of taping the stock and grinding the pad already installed? Those I have installed I have taped the stock after installing the pad and then grind to fit.
