The Bark of the 35 Whelen

Thanks everyone , I think what I'll do is grab a slip on and give it a try and if I like it I will more than likely get a grind to fit and install it.

I took the Remington factory pad off to use for a fit check comparison along with me to Bass Pro Shop today to get a new pad.
When I tried to get the screws out I could only get one out and destroyed the pad trying to get the top screw out. Remington must have used a power tool to tighten the screws because the Philips head was striped out and you couldn't get the bit to bite. After peeling the rubber pad off the base I took a pair of vise grips and removed the screw.
Looked at several Limb saver pads while I was at bass Pro and couldn't find a exact match for the one I took off since I took the base along.
Found one that was close and bought it . It's a tad over size in places but I can trim it down with my dremel tool.
They didn't have any grind to fit or medium slip on so since I had destroyed the factory pad I got one that fit the closest so I could shoot it.
I also picked up a Wheeler Fat wrench while I was there. Always wanted one and it jumped out at me and wouldn't let go with out it.
The Limb saver feels a lot better then the brick that was on it.
Now I can't wait to shoot it again.

A few years back I found a Winchester M70 push feed in .300 Win. Mag. with what looked like a McMillan stock with blind magazine. The sad excuse for what passed as a recoil pad was so hard it made the Rock of Gibralter look like a soft sponge. Seriously, that thing hurt to shoot. I had a Decelerator laying around that was a close enough fit and put it on the rifle. Made all the difference in the world.
I bought an M70 made around 1968 based on the serial number that had a limbsaver on it. That pad was turning into some kind of ungly goo. I won't be putting one of those back on the gun as a replacement. THe pad on my custom .35 Whelen is starting to get hard so I do believe it will be getting a Decelerator in the near future, hopefully in time for my next elk hunt.

Paul, I was looking for a Decelerator but they didn't have one and I needed a pad so I picked one that fit close enough to use.
