Guys I am new to loadin high power, been loadin my 45acp for a few years now .I have read a lot about loading too close to the lands. Just bought a rem700 loaded some speer 165gr over re19. when i started seating bullet I tryed to find the lands by seating well over the test col but could not hit them. am i doin something wrong or is the remmy just made so I cannot do something wrong

Some rifles, including my remingtons, have a long throat. I load mine to fit the magazine and get good results.

country, what caliber? 30/06? I have been able to reach the lands in every Remington I have ever worked with, well over 100 rifles of a variety of calibers. Just seating it over a certain col may not work. Resize enough of the neck to just hold the bullet and close it in the chamber. Check to make sure the bullet hasn't moved forward as the case is with drawn. Simple tools will also work, Stoney Point makes an excellent tool.
Rick.

To add to rick's method.
Alwasy use an unprimed case with no powder. Instead of resizing the neck a bit, put a small dent in the neck, seat your bullet just deep enough to hold the bullet, color the bullet with a sharpe marker and insert into your chamber and close the bolt. When the bullet contacts the lands it will be pushed into the case. When you open the bolt and extract the case the bullet might get stuck in the bore. Thats OK. use a cleaning rod and dislodge the bullet while being carefull not to damage your crown. The dent in the case will leave a scrape mark on the colored bullet. Seat the bullet back into the case until the scrape mark is no longer visible. Measure your case overall length. This is a good starting piont for your col. I will use this method a couple of times to get an average. I will seat .015 under the average and insert one in the chamber, lock the bolt, extract and check the bullet for any marks made from contacting the rifleing. Then check to see if the cartrige will fit in your magazine and function well. If you are not worried about a quick follow up shot and will be satisfied with a single shot, don't worry about fitting the cartrige into the magazine.

rick,I am loading30/06. the 165 grain bullet is speer pointed soft point
I set one just far enough in to hold the bullet, measured length, colored the bullet with a sharpy pen the put it in the chamber ,I could see no differenc when i pulled the bullet out of the chamber.

countryboy, I assume you closed the bolt on that round. I have not had a Rem 700 30/06 with a throat that long. If you happen to have some 220gr flat base bullets, try one of them.Rick.

country boy,
what is the primary purpose of your rifle.
Like I mentiioned earlier, I get good results loading to fit the magazine.
There is nothing wrong if your rifle has a long throat. I shoot groups sub moa all the time with ammo loaded to fit the magazine.

Country boy, since you named the bullet and tip I have a sneaky feeling you may be looking at the wrong part of the bullet when you were checking for land marks. The front of the bullet is irrelevant. From the ogive to the rear of the bullet is where you should be looking for the rifling marks or spots on your bullets. At any rate, since this will be a hunting load, I suggest seating your bullets to clear the magazine by .010 of your magazine oal and you should be good to go with all necessary follow up shots and you should find great accuracy. Work up to around 57 grains IMR 4350 with that 165 speer and you should be ready to go hunting in no time.

I have a Remington 721 in .270 win. and i know what you mean since it doesn't matter how little i seat the bullet i've never touched the lands.I just seat to fit magazine and she groups great. This is actually the only rifle i've ever owned where i can not contact the lands.

Countryboy just wants to know where the lands are in his rifle so he doesn't hit them. He has not mentioned he wants to seat near them.Rick.

Thanks guys,
all the info has helped me to ease my mind.Today im gonna go fire the rounds I loaded.

o.k. I srewed up about being able to find the lands. My mistake was that when i started lookin for them I was seating the bullet to the max col in my speer manual.using the 165 speer spitzer I hit them just over the col.
once I saw the markings on the bullet I gradually seated the bullet to just past contact.I finally found that after bout 3 hours of all the different methods over and over again that. using the spent round that I reloaded I put a dent in the side of the neck,I then used a cigarette lighter to soot the bullet ,I just put the bullet in the case and closed the bolt. it pushed the bullet into the case and when I ejected the shell left a clear mark up the bullet I pushed it back to the end of the mark and took a measure. It was just over the maximum col.To finally clear the lands I was under max col. Now the new question is .Is it safe to seat the bullet about halfway down the neck?If I want to get around .020 behind the lands the tail end of this bullet will only be about halfway down the neck. Thanks for all the info guys.
Hope this was not too lengthy
