I think your on to something there. Both of my FW's are like that 6.5X55 and 7X57 but I recently handled a 264WM is not in fact those have a standard sporter contour barrel on them. Are you saying that stainless shrinks more that chromoly in similar temperatures?
 
Stainless has a higher tendency to burst at lower temperatures when exposed to high pressures. That is why many companies will not make as small of contours in stainless as they will chromoly.
