The 'Rut' is on in Scotland

That sounds like a 'blast' Mike. :) There's a place in the heart for many a would be Jag owner, but not one that usually would include venturing forth with a bunch of hunters & fishermen in it. Lol

With the shooting of stag season closing on 21st. October, last week I spent some time hunting the hinds with four good friends. I was again invited to the cottage in Scotland and went there last Wednesday, staying until Sunday afternoon, then making the four & half hour journey back home.

We enjoyed mixed weather conditions...dry with some rain squalls on a couple of days. The stags were still roaming around and some were seen, although I didn't see one while there.
However, the total red hinds shot was two, three calves also were shot. One of my friends also shot a small roe doe and its fawn, so seven beast in total.
Five feral goat were also shot...my personal score was one roe doe missed and one red hind & calf shot.

Home again now and very much looking forward to the next trip :) Cheers, ET

It does sound as if it was a good experience, nonetheless. So, tell me, of the creatures shot, do you have a preference for the meat? Hind, stag, roe or feral goat? Just curious about your preference.

No wonder my Murray and Glover ancestors that came from Scotland settled in what is now East Tennessee in the USA. It looks just like the Scottish highlands. Wish we had stag like that here. Thanks for the pictures.

The best venison in the UK in my view comes from young hinds or does. Stags & bucks especially at the rutting time are likely to be pretty 'gamey' in aroma anyway & probably hung out with lots of testosterone circulating, so not my ideal choice. Mature hinds are fine, but the younger ones are better!
It's a great time just now in the autumn (fall) here, leaves turning and the full flow of hind/doe stalking getting into stride. This will carry on now until 15th Feb for hinds & 31st March for does.
I'll go to Scotland as often as time will allow until mid Feb. So probably another two or three trips.

Magic! Cheers, ATB
