Well I was hoping to get more done this week but the good stomach bug has put me in my place.
We will see how long the Arken hold up on the 30-30.

I’m going to try the 110gr TTSX out on deer next season.

One of my nephews went to CO this fall and killed an elk with a 28 Nosler. Ran into a local hunter who was kind enough to give him some tips and stated he hunts with a 30-30 or 30-06.

I hear ya! Biggest NT Whitetail ever killed in Maine, was shot with a 25-20! ( The Hill Gould Buck) Best Typical 193 B&C shot with 32 Special.....
I am down to one 30/30...... 1978 Antlered Game.

Yes, but the one doing the shooting was a hunter and not a shooter. Makes all the difference in the world.

Gotta go back and look it up some time, but I believe Jack O'Connor wrote that his go to sheep rifle was a 25-20 or some other "small" lever action. I know for sure it wasnt a 270. Portability and accuracy trumped power. Hmm....... CL

I only have four rifles.
REM 700 in 30-06 (my wedding present to myself)
A Tikka T3X compact in .308 win. (My practical rifle)
A Ruger 10/22 (my fun time plinking rifle)
And my Winchester model 94 in 30-30 (probably favorite rifle.)
It’s a 1980, so not the desired pre 64 but it was the right price at the right time, and I always wanted one from the time I was a youngin’ growing up watching Saturday morning westerns.
I love still hunting in the close woods which is why I have the Tikka, as it is scoped and the 94 which has a Williams peep on it, and I carried the 94 the most this season.
Still have to get some blood on it, but boy is it a pleasure to carry in those woods!

Today the temp made it to 32* and we had less wind. I had a few 110s loaded up to hit some paper. I’m pretty happy with the results.

A TTSX at that speed and level of accuracy will put a lot of venison in the freezer.

Might keep trying different bullet combinations in this ol’ Savage.

If the Arken can hold up I’m thinking of something sleeker for 600 yds. It has plenty of elevation for 180gr AB.

I think you'll find that most Elk taken with a 30.30 are 100 yards or less. Many years ago I took a bull moose with a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. Shot was approximately 40 yards. Moose went down rather quickly. Within their range limitations they work very well.

I’ve been on the lookout for quite some time for a bolt action 30-30. I finally brought one home yesterday , a Savage 840. I’m very pleased in the overall condition of the rifle.

Now I can load any bullet I want without worrying about a tubular magazine.
