Time for a 6.5-300wm

What barrel did you use on yours Joel? This one is a Bartlein. It's the 3rd one I've used and all of them have been easily sub 1/2" guns.

I should have my 7-300wm done tomorrow as well. It's a Schneider #5 contour with a 9 twist and 5P rifling.

Well I backed it down a bit and shot this group at 300yds this morning. It's 1.15" at 3170fps with 140 Amax's. The load is 70grs of Retumbo. I think it is ready to roll for opener of deer on Wed. I did correct the zero BTW.

Sure sounds as though that 6.5 is ready for whatever!

It is an 8 twist Brux, finished at 26". Pillar bedded in the original featherweight stock that the donor rifle came from.

AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME, I knew it would work! That is 2.5 grains less powder than mine for about the same speed. Awesome shooting buddy! I'm stoked for you. It would be hard to not use that to drill shoulders on an elk! It is beautiful when it comes together huh! That is great speed Joel. Can't wait till our next 600 yard range day. That is deadly!

I'm looking forward to checking the drops on Jeffs range and see if they hold true with the scope that is on it. It did exactly what we talked about on Saturday with the increment climb in velocity and than it went from 3080's to 3170's with the next highest load. No sticky bolt or pressure signs, but it was only 42 degrees here this morning.

I got a picture of the group attached finally. 3 shots at 300yds with 70grs of Retumbo and a 140 Amax doing 3170fps, 1.15".

NICE!! Man, that is singing buddy! Looks like a great shooting combo right there. Just something about the fast 264's that makes me smile. Not sure if it is the light recoil or what, but those rifles are so much fun to shoot and work so well when the ranges get longer.

I shot some R-33 and N 570 through it this morning and it did pretty well. 75 grs of R-33 ran 3212, 3223, 3231 for velocity with no pressure signs and shot sub 1/2". 71grs of N-570 went 3217 and 3231 for velocity. 72grs was a little sticky on extraction and went 3254fps. So I'll probably try more R-33 and see if it will drop my ES and SD some from the Retumbo load I'm shooting now. It looks like I'll pick up 40-50fps with R-33. I'm not real sure how temp stable it is though.

Those are certainly nice, tight velocities you are reporting. Nothing wrong with that.

Nice work!

I'm gonna try talking my dad into rebarreling his 264 into a 6.5-300 win mag when the time comes. He also wants a 28". I was thinking 3300 with 140 amax would be killer for LR antelope/deer...

I am going to have my 7 mag rebarreled to a 7mm-300 mag with a 28" bbl in hopes of getting the 162 amax to 3200fps comfortably and accuarate when the time comes for it.

The 300 mag case isn't to bad. I've always thought about necking the 300 down to 7mm long before it started becoming popular.

If I didn't like the 7mm so much and want 1 rifle for big game, I'd do a 6.5 for antelope/deer, but the 7 is just a little more versatile and bit better for elk/bear IMO so I'd rather go that route for a 1 do all big game cartridge.
