Good looking deer, Jim. We saw a massive whitetail buck driving home in the dark this evening. Man, that gets my blood pumping.

This year I tried bow hunting on some state land on the opposite side of a lake of where I normally hunt. I setup a stand back in the beginning of September in a wood lot bordering a pond. I picked up a trail cam and set it up monitoring the trails. The recordings I had been getting were all after dark or during the night. Opening morning I had spooked something that was bedded behind the stand in the thicket as I tried getting to it. Yesterday I went to the stand early about 1:30 due to being overcast and looked like they would move early. About 4:30 someone shoots at the pond with a shotgun and I can hear them rack the slide. My guess was that they were about 40-50 yards away through the brush. About 15 minutes later more shooting but further away on the pond. About 5:20 I decided to climb down and leave. I went there this morning to take everything down so I can move it to the other side of the lake when I get back from Co. I plug in the memory card when I get home and found that just over 15 minutes after I left yesterday a bunch of deer had come through for the first time before dark. Then I get this buck that also had come through, about 4am yesterday morn. It figures….

Go back and set up a mock scrape with a dripper and then hunt it towards the end of Oct.

JD, thanks I'm keeping that in mind. There is another real big buck working about 300 yards from there but there are a couple of guys hunting in the area that would interfere with trying to set up on him. I know where he is bedding but as the big bucks do, its almost impossible to get near him the way he positions himself. He is a bruiser. I'll have to get in before the others to try to get past them and set up. I'll have to do this the first week of Nov because this area gets hammered once small game opens up and everything changes.

Don't overlook setting up a ground brush blind.
I shot this buck last week at 15 yards from the ground.

For sure, he is a big buck. You will have your pick of some fine deer.
