As part of my looking for the perfect scope for my 7m-08, just in case the Conquest 3 x 9 isnt, I am looking at the Leupold Ultralites.

I like the weight loss but....what am I giving up in light transmission etc. Especially with the VarII.

Would an ultralite make a good big woods, low light scope?

Long,

Look at the VXIII 2.5x8 as a smaller, lighter scope for your 7-08.
Its really all the scope you need for hunting in the UP.

I'll have to look into that a bit. From what I have read previously it is actually a longer scope and is about the same weight as a 3 x 9. Maybe I have it mixed up with something else.

Thanks JD. I looked on a couple different sites and the info on weight is different on each one....hmmm but for a couple ounces I might as well go whole hog and just get a full size.

Long,

I have used the VX III 2.5x8x36 scope for many years on my 35 Whelen, 280 Rem, and 338 RUM. Hunting both hardwoods and cedar swamps in the UP, it provided a bright image well past legal shooting light.

Give up the Zeiss
I've been a Leupold fan for years and just currently purchased my first Zeiss 4.5 X 14. I had actually gone to purchase a Leupold and got to looking at them side by side.... glass clarity I have to say was similiar with no preference going to one of the other. Is what made my decision was in certian light, the Leupold X-hairs would turn the burnt orange / rust color where as the Zeiss stayed black.
I did just purchase another Leupold VX-II 6 X 18 a few weeks ago for my VTR though.

I have a 2008 Leupold book showing the " Ultralight " series....They are VX-II's 2-7x28 @ 8.2oz, 3-9x33 @ 8.8oz & 3-9x33 EFR @ 11.0 oz. Book states " All the features of their full-size counterparts, with up to 17 percent less weight "
Book gives all type of dimensions if you need them.......

........................Long!..............You bet they would! I assume since you mention "big woods" that your killing ranges will more than likely be less than 200 yards.

If so, here is another suggestion which is based on personal experience with this scope. I rotate this scope between my two rifles, a .300 WSM Ruger compact with sometimes a Nikon Monarch EER scout on it and my .375 Ruger Alaskan. It`s the 1.5-5x20 VX3.

This scope is 10" long and weighs 9.5 oz, which will keep your overall rifle weight down........Set on the lower powers, it is extremely fast to the target, moving or otherwise, with both eyes open capability and good in low light. A rifle can only handle as good as the scope that`s mounted on it...........Offers great FOV`s and great eye relief.........1.5x on the low end is a perfect magnification for shorter range woods hunting with quick target acquisition, aiming and firing should any surprises occur........While set at the high power, it is very adequate for longer range precision shots on deer sized game and larger even to 350-400 yards.

While this scope offers the best magnification, size, low weight, quickness, and eye relief for a 375 DGR, I found it to be excellent in all areas when mounted on my 300 WSM.

The 2.5-8x36 VX3 as mentioned is another good choice which is good for the woods and for the more open plains. But my 1st pick for the woods, for its lighter weight, better FOV, quicker handling, speed and faster aiming, as well as its capability for the longer range shots,,,, goes to the 1.5-5x20 VX3.

Nope, would never give up on Zeiss Conquests  but they don't make a "ultralight" scope. And since I have never had a Leupy thought it would help me be more well rounded :) .

But the scope will be on hold now....see Off Topic for the reason.
