At the recommendation and prompting of DrMike and a couple others, I succumbed to the lure of the 35 Whelen and bought a Remington Classic today. The first one I inquired about had a Burris 1 3/4 X 5 compact scope but, when I inquired about the scope he told me the front lens looked like someone had tried to clean it with RemOil and the other lens looked like the coating was gone and a little cloudy. They wanted $850 for it so, I declined and went for another one at a better price and a Weaver K4.

Time to order some dies, brass and a mould.I think I have the necessary powders. I really needed another toy.

As soon as it gets here I'm going to slug the bore and order a mould from Tom of Accurate Moulds. I have thee of his, two in brass and one aluminum and they're superb. I'm going to get one cavity that mimics the RCBS 210 gr bullet and the other a 245 gr. That should give a little spice to reloading. I'm hoping the seating stem will work with the cast bullets as they both have a flat meplat of around 1.880".

Oh My ! You been drinking the cool-aide it sounds like and Congrats on the additions to the safe ! Nobody here will stear ya in the wrong direction thats for sure! If it's 1/2 as nice as that 7x57 you have done really nice! Happy for ya and look forward to no scope issues :)

That Mauser is a sweetheart, some of the nicest wood for that model I've seen. I can't wait to try it out next week. I've already got twenty rounds ready to go. The scope is a good one and looks good to boot. Once I get her bore sighted it generally doesn't take me but two shots to sight it in. I'm looking for sub MOA groups from this baby.

This is the one I bought today. They already show it as sold.

I tried. :) It has a sling identical to the one I had on my custom 270 back n the early 70's. The fellow I talked with today said the photos didn't do the rifle justice. A K4 Weaver...Jack O'Connor would be well pleased.

Welcome to the Whelen family :). You are really going to enjoy that 35 very easy to load for. They are quite the hammer for a non magnum .
There is nothing in North American that will need more!!
Looking forward to more photos with a range report!!

Blessings,
Dan

Nice your going to love it mild recoil and great performance. If everyone had a 338 or 35 based 06 they would begin to wonder why most magnums are really needed. They are efficient beautiful and shootable.

There seems to be a lot of love for the Whelen here...quite surprised. It's good to see this much interest in old cartridges. So many today(mostly the younger set) are enamored by the WSM cartridges and 1000 yard shots it's refreshing to see a different attitude.

Good luck with your search. I have had my 700 Classic since 1988 and it has taken quite a few WT bucks ans a 250 lb Black bear. It is an absolute hammer on game.
Pick up some RL 15. ;)

What is this mythical "RL15" that some of you speak about? I haven't seen such a thing here in the past eighteen months or so. Are you sure this hasn't gone extinct? :?

I don't judge, I like my WSMs and my SAUM as well!

I snagged a pound of RL 15 about a month ago to use in another caliber. I'm glad I did as it seems one of the top powders to use with either jacketed or cast. I have three pounds of IMR 4064 also-may as well put that to use, also.
