Upcoming Whelen

I'm really looking forward to them. Your 7x57 is floating in my dreams at night.

I just had to take a pic of the old Nosler 140 gr Partition. Sitting around over 40 years it's time it performed! 48.5 gr of 4350 should be a good start.

Looks as if it would fulfil its destiny.

Mighty purdy rifles. I was sent an email today via 3 day UPS Select. I hope it gets here by Friday at least. That will give me some time to spend with the usual cleaning and admiring and maybe even making some rounds before I have to go in for the operation Tuesday week.

Got one pound...probably will need more. I'm about afraid to order any at this point as I don't know when it would get here and next week I'll be in the hospital at least 3-4 days. We've got a gun show August 16-17th and I've always lucked out getting whatever powder I need there. I even found H322 last time! That's like finding hen's teeth.

Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd just keep in the same vein about this rifle. I'm debating on rings and mounts and would be appreciative of any suggestions for those taking into account this caliber. I have a little of everything on other rifles like the Burris Zee rings, Talley rings and mounts and Leupold DD mounts and rings. I don't like the windage mounts they offer and that's why I went with the DD mounts.

In short, if it were your rifle, what would you choose for this Remington 700? I'm sure any would be sufficient but wanted some opinions.

I'd probably run a set of Talley QDs without the lever. I had to use a rail so I could get enough eye relief but ran DD's by Leupold for a long time. Got tired of being tapped by the scope.

Good suggestions but, I don't really care for the QD mounts. The rifle comes with a Weaver 4X and Weaver mounts, which I've never liked so, they'll come off. The problem with the QD mounts I found on another rifle was trying to lap them...a real pain. :)

Talkers won't need lapping buddy. I lap others as well but the Talley QDs are very good as is. If you like the Dual Dovetails no reason to not use them again.

I've had to lap several, maybe I thought those were one of them. This getting old is terrible or maybe I've got too many rifles. What I actually have on the 243 is the Talley Fixed Mount system. The DD's are good but you have to have the strength of Godzilla to turn them rings. A gunsmith told me to always put some anti-seize on the rings so they wouldn't gaul. There's much to be said for that. I hadn't done that before and maybe it would have been easier to turn them.

Good idea. Never heard of that but it makes sense. I'll have to try it out.

I must be loosing it. I could have sworn I posted pictures of this but can't seem to find them so...without further ado....

Oh man! That's beautiful! Very handsome rifle. Just a great hunting rifle. I'm thinking you'll have a load soon and you'll Hammer a buck this Fall. Beautiful rifle! Great score.

I was most pleased with it. The photos of it didn't even do it justice. I was expecting a few scratches and gauges here and there but none were visible and the scope could pass for nearly new. However, the Weaver rings and mounts must go!

I've already got some loads ready. I have Nosler's 225 and 250 gr PT and Hornady's 200 gr Spire point and have 25 loads with RL-15 and IMR 4064. Now, I have to be patient(pretty hard) and wait till the surgery is over and it will be wonderful to be able to walk to the 100 yard target frame to tack up my targets without leg pain.

I wish you good luck in your surgery and hope your able to get shooting soon.

Thanks. In looking the rifle over I was surprised it looked like it never was taken out in the field. It couldn't have been shot much as the bolt face looked pristine as did the bore. I may have lucked up for sure.
