Here is a snap of Jeff's 30-338 and Suppressed 22. Thought it was a cool picture and Jeff asked me to throw it up. Scotty

The 30-338 is a whomper and a stomper, that's for certain. I'm working up loads built around the 200 grain AB for one right now.

I have always wondered why Winchester didn't use the 30-338 as their basis rather than the case design they used for their 300 Win Mag. The 300 Win has a pinch more case capacity but a shorter neck which I has given me problems keeping long bullets like the 200 AB held in place without employing a crimp. The 30-338 is one I have never shot yet but I have always thought about getting one to try. the 30-338 and 300 Win Mag are just as on par as can be with ballistics. Oh well, I have a 300 WSM now and so that 30-338 is getting harder to justify haha. Tell me Dr. Mike, what is the difference between the 30-338 and the 308 Norma Mag. Sierra manual suggests using the same data for both cases.

Those are both top notch looking rifles for sure!

Actually the 308 norma is closer to the 30-338 than the 300 winchester if you want to split hairs. I have shot all three and the reason I picked the 30-338 is the fact that its more consistent in the accuracy dept. I do use the norma brass for that. Loading is simple take a 338 win greased run it in the 30-338 full length sizer and fire form it. I will always go with accuracy over speed any day. The 30-338 pushes the 190 vld right at 3000 safely and with precision. and 3000 fps with a 190 will take care of any animal I hunt at any distance I am capable of shooting. I think my smiths most popular chamberings are the 30-338 and the 280 ackley. There both extremely efficient and accurate!
Thanks for the replies its nice to get on a forum and have people show interest in things you can't buy at cabelas!

As a kid I had a bullet collection and my best friend had about the same deal. It was a constant competition between us to acquire new cartridges the other did not have. I remember I got a 458WM and that doggoned buddy of mine got a 308 Norma.. Never seen or fired one, but when it came time to buy another rifle, I got the 300WM as there wasn't really such a thing as a Norma anymore. Your right though, I would enjoy a longer neck on the 300WM. It really makes the case difference pretty nice and the nice long neck is really slick..

Your right Jeff, it is cool to see stuff that can't be bought over the counter. Scotty

If I remember correctly the 308 norma was pretty popular for awhile in the late 40s and 50s the surplus mauser actions were a good platform for the 308 norma and easy enough bolt face modifications were conducive to using that cartridge.

I heard the same thing Jeff. The one cartridge that I really like is the 358 Norma. For some reason, that seems like the epitome of heavy game hunting cartridges to me. I know there are better, but that one in a nice M70 would be pretty awesome. Scotty

I've shot a few 308 Normas. They were killed off by the 300 WM. They are effectively ballistic twins.

I had a Norma .308 Mag for awhile in the late 1960's. I just formed .338 WM cases (from my Browning) and necked them down to .308 Norma. I do the same now for the .338 Federal, since you can not buy cases anywhere, I just form Hornady .308 Match cases up to .338 Federal.

Thanks for the comments guys good stuff, I will have another pic for scott to post when I get my barrel back from kampfeld customs in michigan. I had my 1-8 twist lilja barrel for my 22-243 middlestead sent up there to get spiral fluted 360 degrees to match the bat machine reciever. Will keep you posted on quality of work, turn around is 10 days and they came highly recommended.

I wish I had payed closer attention to a friends 308 Norma mag when he used to hunt with me back in the 90's. It was some Swedish make and he used it for everything we hunted and a Dall sheep hunt in BC. Seemed to work well on whatever he shot.

Fin d some older loading manuals from the 1970-1980's. Some of my old manuals have some fairly stiff loads for the Norma rounds.

Was it one of those Huskavarna's (sp)? I know they made a few in 308 and 358 Norma. I passed a 358 Norma at a gun show I am still booting myself a little for. It was sweet and the price was great, just really didn't know what I was looking at really. I am still beating myself over the head a little. Scotty
