Vanguard S2 or 700 SPS

Yes, the 1500 is basically the same action as the Vanguard. Weatherby specs it out a tad differently but the parts are interchangeable as are the stocks. Either rifle is a serious bargain at prices I've seen.

For sure, the Howa is a sleeper. All I've shot were well worth the price.

I've had a heavy barreled Howa 243 on my wish list for many years. Figuring I'll run up on one for a deal one of these days. Can't imagine a better rifle to just enjoy shooting than a heavy, 24" tubed 243Win. Recoil would seem almost 22lr level with 70-80gr bullets. I bet the yotes around here wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

Yup, one of my 7WSMs is a Howa, and one of my .223s is a Vanguard. Same basic rifle.

What mounts should I put on the Vanguard? Dad is going to put a Nikon Buckmaster 3-4x40.

My choices would be:
1 S&Ks (spendy though)
2 Talley LW
3 Leupold Dual Dovetail

Actually, in the Talleys, there are different mounts for the Vannie and the 700. Bridge heights are about .008" different, I think. Something tiny like that.

I had been thinking of the Leupold Dual Dovetail and the DNZ Game Reaper mounts but will look into the Talley mounts as well.

Talleys are excellent for mounting a scope; I have at least ten rifles set up with Talleys.

I have one Talley one-piece mount and it's solid. The majority of my rifles have Warne mounts and I'm extremely satisfied with their product.

I knew there was a difference, but I did not know that Talley made different mounts. Good to know.

Just a side question about the S2's. I looked at one at Bass Pro and was also looking at a Browning A-Bolt, both in 243. The Weatherby was about $70 less but I noticed it didn't have a floated barrel.

Have any of you S2 users noticed any detrimental effects from that ?

Weatherbys never float the Vanguard barrel, and ironically Howas (same action as the Vanguard, same manufacturer) all have floated barrels.

My Vanguard (mid 80s edition) shoots just as well in its original wood stock as it does floated in the Hogue youth stock it now sits in. I would not be afraid of the Vanguard having its pressure points unless you plan on really pushing on the rifle when you have a bipod mounted. If so I'd be sure to confirm how it shoots in that configuration.

Many, many older Rem 700s have pressure points on the stock and shoot well too.
