My oldest boy (14) has expressed a desire to learn how to hunt. He is more interested in varmint hunting (coyotes, etc) than food hunting for now. I am not a hunter. I've been shooting for 30+ years, but always pistols and target shooting. I'd like to go varminting too and just picked up a Rem 700 .245 Win tonight.

Anybody out there know anyone that might be able to teach us over the next few months here in NH, or elsewhere in New England?

Also looking for load recommendations for the .243 WIN would be appreciated.

Thanks

Back in my 243 Win days, I used to shoot the following load:

243 Win
70 gr BT
IMR4895 39.5 grs
W-W case
Federal GM210M primer

Accuracy was well under MOA and the 70 gr BT did an excellent job on woodchucks.

I just picked up a bunch of once fired RP cases all from the same lot and 1000 CCI small rifle primers. How sensitive do you find your loads to different cases and primers?

Start low and work up.
Starting load listed is 36.0 grs and MAX is 40.0 grs.

Doesn't the .243 take large rifle primers?

Otherwise - you're on your way! Enjoy the time afield with your son and the new predator/varmint rifle - BTW, you may well find that the .243 works just fine on deer as well.

Doh - that's what you get when you try to do too many things at the same time - brain stops working :) Large they are...
